The title of this sounds pretty lofty, doesn’t it? For those of you who don’t have a finished manuscript, though, this might not be so useful. Write your novel, edit it, then see if you can cut the first chapter. Don’t count the writing as a waste, YOU needed to know what was going on so you could write the rest of the book. Then, it’s time to tweak that 1st line.
The first line of a novel has a lot of work to do.
At Balticon51, I attended one workshop on opening sentences with Steve Lubs and another on opening pages with Meg Eden. This is a lot of what they said, combined with knowledge from other places. (I tried not to copy their hand-outs directly.)

Book promotion services provide a wide range of services to authors including promotional tours for cover reveals, new releases, and blog tours. Many also offer publishing support features for indie authors like manuscript editing, book formatting, cover design, and book reviews. These are invaluable services to any author which may not necessarily sell books, but go a long way in garnering name recognition for an author and help build the author platform.
When it works.
Recently, a group of authors shared their most recent experiences with promotion services. The emails went from humorous to frustrated to angry quick, fast, and in a hurry.
This is not a condemnation of book promotion services in general, nor any one service in particular. Several authors using several different services all encountered similar ‘problems’ which left authors feeling shortchanged, leading them to cross the service off their list for future promotions. (Authors are…

“Where Dreams Merge (Jasmine Cottage #2)”
Author: Maureen Driscoll
Genre: Historical Romance/Victorian/Gothic
Release Date: July 20, 2017
The second book in the Jasmine Cottage Victorian Romance series follows Grace Moore as she matches wits with writer Carter Beckett, the Earl of Wainwright.
Grace Moore has avidly followed the career of Carter Beckett, who pens pieces for a London newspaper. Never shy to contradict him, she has sent him several letters about his work. What she didn’t expect was for the man himself to visit the country not far from where she lives, even more handsome in real life than his pen and ink picture in the paper.
Carter Beckett is restless. He is attempting to write a novel, but the words simply will not come. However, once he meets the lady who has been his most outspoken critic, he realizes he has finally found his muse. Once the two begin writing letters to each other through alter egos, love of the written word turns into the love of a lifetime.
WHERE DREAMS MERGE is the story of two people reaching beyond their day-to-day lives to find love. This book contains explicit language and graphic sexual scenes. If you don’t like sex with your books, this one isn’t for you, though the author hopes all readers end up with their soul’s mate.
Also in the Jasmine Cottage series:
First things first: a huge thank you to Jennifer Omner at ALLpublications.com for the book covers and designs. An equally huge thank you to Joanna DeGeneres at Joanna DeGeneres.com for the author photo.
Maureen Driscoll is an Emmy-nominated writer-producer in Los Angeles whose credits include “MADtv,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” and Nickelodeon’s “BrainSurge.” She was also a recipient of a Walt Disney Studios screenwriting fellowship, where she wrote a romantic comedy based on her rather painful divorce. The script didn’t make it to the big screen, but it did teach her a few things about happily ever after.
Before moving to Hollywood, Maureen spent nearly a decade working on Capitol Hill. Her novel DATING GEORGE CLOONEY is a political satire inspired by her time there.
WHERE DREAMS MERGE is the second book in the Jasmine Cottage series, set in early Victorian England. It follows two Regency series, one about the Kellington family and the other about the Emersons.
Maureen loves hearing from her readers on Facebook at Maureen Driscoll Author, Twitter, Goodreads, and MaureenDriscollRomance.Wordpress.com.
She is very, very appreciative of her readers and thanks people for taking the Kellingtons, the Emersons and the residents of Jasmine Cottage to heart.
Title: Casual Affair (Slow Seduction #1)
Author: Melanie Munton
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: July 24, 2017
Cover Designer: Entangled Publishing
Hosted by: Buoni Amici Press, LLC.
Bea Paxton is a free spirit. She loves her fledgling interior design business, having fun, and she loves men. But only temporarily. Rule #1 is no relationships, no love, no commitment. She likes being in charge. It’s the only way to protect herself from getting hurt again.
Zane Price is the perfect candidate for a steamy time—beautiful, built, and British. Plus, he’ll soon be moving back to England. Really perfect.
Well…except for the fact that he’s her biggest client. And he doesn’t play by her rules. Hell, no. He wants more. Much more. Which is definitely not on the agenda.
Unfortunately, his kisses are nothing short of toe-curlingly awesome. And he is distracting her—a lot—from doing her job.
She needs to stay away from him. Her livelihood depends on it.
But Zane always gets what he wants. And he wants Bea. But for right now? Or forever…?
She waited for just the right moment, pushing to her feet when she saw her opening. She was zoned in on her target, gun lifting in his direction—and was suddenly flying through the air.
Somebody had hold of her and they were going down. She braced herself for impact with the hard ground, but landed on a firm chest instead. A chest that smelled suspiciously like…Zane Price.
She was rolled off his body and found herself staring up at his face. He looked kind of angry. Huh. She wasn’t expecting that. She could feel his package grinding against her pelvis, so she certainly wasn’t mad about anything. A package that was quickly hardening, by the way.
“Did you just tackle me?” she asked in bewilderment.
She saw him swallow as his eyes flew over her face. “I believe I did, yes.”
Their position on the ground was far too sexual—not that she was doing anything about it. His upper body was hovering over hers so as not to crush her, but their lower bodies were in close contact.
Very close contact.
She cleared her throat. “Why?”
“Because you were about to become a casualty,” he whispered. “I saved your life.”
“My hero.” She’d meant it to sound sarcastic. But her voice came out a lot huskier than she’d intended.
His eyes darkened in response.
Everything below her belly clenched with need, a reaction that his own body mirrored. She felt him grow thick against her thigh, and though he didn’t say anything, she knew they were both aware of what was happening south of the border.
“And you’re still on top of me, why?”
“Because part of me is quite comfortable here,” he admitted. “And a different part of me is about to be in a world of pain once I move. I’m trying to decide which part I should listen to.”
“Do I get a say in this?”
He gave a small thrust of his hips against her, making her gasp. One quick grind that allowed her to feel the full extent of his manhood in all of its stiff glory.
She was a goner.
His eyelids lowered to half-mast as he took in her reaction. “Do you want a say in this?”
