The Book of Polly

by Kathy Hepinstall

Genre: Women’s Fiction/Humor

12.99

For readers of Saving CeeCee Honeycutt, Joshilyn Jackson, and Fannie Flagg, with a touch of Terms of Endearment

A laugh-out-loud funny yet poignant novel about a daughter determined not only to keep her mother among the living but to find out the secrets of her long-buried past

Willow Havens is ten years old and obsessed with the fear that her mother will die.  Her mother, Polly,  is a cantankerous, take-no-prisoners Southern woman who lives to shoot varmints, drink margaritas, and antagonize the neighbors–and she sticks out like a sore thumb among the young, modern mothers of their small conventional Texas town. She was in her late fifties when Willow was born, so Willow knows she’s here by accident, a late-life afterthought. Willow’s father died before she was born, her much older brother and sister are long grown and gone and failing elsewhere: it’s just her and her bigger-than-life mom, Polly.

Willow is desperately hungry for clues to the family life that preceded her, and Polly has her own secrets that she won’t reveal.  Why did she leave her hometown of Bethel, Louisiana, fifty years ago and vow never to return after a mysterious and terrible incident?  Who is Garland Jones, her long-ago suitor who possibly killed a man?  And will Polly be able to outrun The Bear, the illness that finally puts her on a collision course with her closely guarded past and a final trip back to Bethel that will end with them, like Huck Finn, riding a river raft back home?

THE BOOK OF POLLY has a kick like the best hot sauce, and a great blend of humor and sadness, pathos and hilarity. This is a bittersweet novel about the grip of love in a truly quirky family and you’ll come to know one of the most unforgettable mother-daughter duos you’ve ever met.

Swing Time

by Zadie Smith

Genre: Women’s Fiction/Historical Fiction/Cultural Heritage/African

12.99

A New York Times bestseller * Finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction * Longlisted for the Man Booker Prize

An ambitious, exuberant new novel moving from North West London to West Africa, from the multi-award-winning author of White Teeth and On Beauty.

Two brown girls dream of being dancers—but only one, Tracey, has talent. The other has ideas: about rhythm and time, about black bodies and black music, what constitutes a tribe, or makes a person truly free. It’s a close but complicated childhood friendship that ends abruptly in their early twenties, never to be revisited, but never quite forgotten, either.

Tracey makes it to the chorus line but struggles with adult life, while her friend leaves the old neighborhood behind, traveling the world as an assistant to a famous singer, Aimee, observing close up how the one percent live.

But when Aimee develops grand philanthropic ambitions, the story moves from London to West Africa, where diaspora tourists travel back in time to find their roots, young men risk their lives to escape into a different future, the women dance just like Tracey—the same twists, the same shakes—and the origins of a profound inequality are not a matter of distant history, but a present dance to the music of time.

Song Lyric Sunday | Unbreak My Heart – Toni Braxton

SLS banner

Song Lyric Sunday was created by Helen Vahdati from This Thing Called Life One Word at a Time. For complete rules or to join in the fun, click here.

The theme for Song Lyric Sunday this week is “heart.”

~~~~~~~~~~
A half dozen songs came immediately to mind based on this week’s theme. I narrowed it down to three…and you’re getting them all! 😀 Two here and one on FeliciaDenise.com!
Written by song-writing legend Diane Warren, Unbreak My Heart did nothing for Toni Braxton when she first heard it. But L.A. Reid from LaFace Records convinced Toni to record the song and include it on her 1996 album, Secrets.
It was good advice. Unbreak My Heart went on to win a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 39th Annual Grammy Awards in 1997.
The song also enjoyed worldwide success. In the United States, the song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, where it stayed a total of eleven weeks, while reaching the same position on the Hot Dance Club Songs and Adult Contemporary component charts. When Billboard celebrated their 40 years charting from 1958 to 1998, the song was declared as the most successful song by a solo artist in the Billboard Hot 100 history. In Europe, the song reached the top five in more than ten countries while peaking at number one in Austria, Belgium, Sweden, and Switzerland.
The video portrays Toni mourning the death of her lover, while remembering the good times they had together. The love interest was played by gorgeous male model, Tyson Beckford.
Enjoy!
Unbreak My Heart
by Toni Braxton
Songwriter: Diane Warren
[Verse 1]
Don’t leave me in all this pain
Don’t leave me out in the rain
Come back and bring back my smile
Come and take these tears away
I need your arms to hold me now
The nights are so unkind
Bring back those nights when I held you beside me
[Chorus]
Un-break my heart
Say you’ll love me again
Undo this hurt you caused
When you walked out the door
And walked out of my life
Un-cry these tears
I cried so many nights
Un-break my heart
My heart
[Verse 2]
Take back that sad word goodbye
Bring back the joy to my life
Don’t leave me here with these tears
Come and kiss this pain away
I can’t forget the day you left
Time is so unkind
And life is so cruel without you here beside me
[Chorus]
Un-break my heart
Say you’ll love me again
Undo this hurt you caused
When you walked out the door
And walked out of my life
Un-cry these tears
I cried so many nights
Un-break my heart
My heart
[Bridge]
Don’t leave me in all this pain
Don’t leave me out in the rain
Bring back the nights when I held you beside me
[Chorus]
Un-break my heart oh baby
Come back and say you love me
Un-break my heart
Sweet darlin’
Without you I just can’t go on
[Outro]
Say that you love me, say that you love me
Tell me you love me, un-break my heart
Say that you love me, say that you love me
Tell me you love me, un-break my heart
Say that you love me, say that you love me
Tell me you love me, un-break my heart
Say that you love me, say that you love me
Tell me you love me, un-break my heart
~~~~~

More than twenty years later, this song is still making people cry!

James Horner first wrote the musical backing for My Heart Will Go On as part of the Titanic score, taking inspiration from Jethro Tull. Then he decided to add lyrics, courtesy of Will Jennings. After Celine Dion was convinced to record (not her first time doing a movie theme), Horner had to find a day where the notoriously ill-tempered Cameron would be welcoming to show him.

My Heart Will Go On then was turned into the end credits theme, and its association to the eventual highest-grossing movie ever (until Cameron topped itself 11 years later) led to the song topping charts everywhere, as well as an Oscar and two Grammys… and overexposure to the point Titanic star Kate Winslet admits she feels like throwing up when hearing it.

It did get over-played a bit. Okay, Okay… a LOT, but I still enjoy it. Hope you do too!

My Heart Will Go On

by Celine Dion

Written by James Horner and Will Jennings

[Verse 1]
Every night in my dreams
I see you, I feel you
That is how I know you go on
Far across the distance
And spaces between us
You have come to show you go on

[Chorus]
Near, far, wherever you are
I believe that the heart does go on
Once more you open the door
And you’re here in my heart
And my heart will go on and on

[Verse 2]
Love can touch us one time
And last for a lifetime
And never let go until we’re gone
Love was when I loved you
One true time I hold to
In my life we’ll always go on

[Chorus]
Near, far, wherever you are
I believe that the heart does go on
Once more you open the door
And you’re here in my heart
And my heart will go on and on

[Outro]
You’re here, there’s nothing I fear
And I know that my heart will go on
We’ll stay forever this way
You are safe in my heart
And my heart will go on and on
