The theme for Song Lyric Sunday this week is “smile.”

~~~~~~~~~~
Baby Boomers may recall the early 80s KFC commercial featuring the legendary Ella Fitzgerald and an adorable nine-year-old girl. We didn’t know her name then but nine years later Shanice Loraine Wilson would simply be known as Shanice.  The light, fun I Love Your Smile is the lead single from Shanice’s sophomore album Inner Child, released in October of 1991. This song is special to me because my daughter, Lindsey, was born in December of 1991 and this was one of “our songs” from her birth until, well…today, and she’s almost 27! 😀
The song became a hit, topping Billboard’s Hot R&B Singles chart for 4 weeks and also became a pop hit, peaking at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also was a top ten hit in dozens of countries around the world in 1992.
I Love Your Smile was nominated for a Grammy for “Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.”
Janet Jackson and her then-husband Rene Elizondo Jr. provided background vocals and can also be heard laughing at the end of the song.
Enjoy!
I Love Your Smile
by Shanice
Songwriters:
Sitting in my class, just drifting away
Staring into the windows of the world
I can’t hear the teacher, his books don’t call me at all
I don’t see the bad boys tryin’ to catch some play…
’cause I love your smile
I love your smile
The clock at work says three
And I wanna be free
Free to scream, free to bathe, free to paint
My toes all day
My boss is lame you know, and so is the pay
I’m gonna put that new black mini on my charge anyway
’cause I love your smile
I love your smile
Time came and showed me your direction
Now I know I’ll never ever go back
Taught me that
I can be a better girl with love you give
You rock my world
You dig
I’m showin’
The life that I’m livin’
This is the life that I have
And it’s given to you
Yeh’and it’s true
La-d-da
Twinkley d
do you
Believe in a girl
like me
Shanice is the one
For you to be with
But when I’m caught
All alone
I start fessin’
It’s from a state of depression
And the thunder clouds of doubt move in
I begin to wonder “Do you still love me?”
But after that
My whole world is beautiful
Blow Branford
Blow
Time came and showed me your direction
Now I know I’ll never ever go back
Taught me that
I can be a better girl with love you give
You rock my world
You dig
Smile…Pstch
’cause I love your smile
I love your smile
    I don’t think I’ve heard this before. I like it alot! I love looking at old videos…the fashions from back in the day😀 My older daughter is 29, she got “You Are My Sunshine” as her song.
      I enjoy looking at older music and seeing how the trends have come and gone. I miss some of them a lot. 😊
    What a great song pick! I didn’t think I’d heard it before, but I think I actually have. I loved her smile while she was singing this. I also love that it’s your song with your daughter! Thanks so much for sharing!
