The theme for Song Lyric Sunday this week is “game.”

~~~~~~~~~~
Great theme this week as there are so many songs about games, and especially games of love, but I went The Game of Love by rock legend Carlos Santana and featuring Michelle Branch.
This was one of those songs music lovers everywhere seemed to relate to. It charted in dozens of countries, and here in the US it went to number one on the Adult Contemporary and Adult Top 40 charts, number five on the Billboard Hot 100 and Mainstream Top 40 charts, AND it picked up the 2003 Grammy for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals.         (Yes, I picked a song from THIS century – HUSH!)
It’s safe to say everyone at some point is a player in the game of love. In this song, she’s calling her lover out – either we’re going to do this…or not!
FUN FACTS:
The Game of Love was first recorded by co-songwriter Gregg Alexander and his band, but producer Clive Davis wanted a female lead.
Tina Turner nailed it, but she didn’t want to participate in the video.
Macy Gray was ‘okay’ but Clive Davis still wasn’t satisfied.
Michelle Branch won the spot on the recording and the video.
Though he loves Michelle’s version and is grateful for their success, the Tina Turner version of the song remains Carlos Santana’s favorite and is part of his 2007 retrospective, Ultimate Santana.
Enjoy!
  1. Oh, my how have I not heard this before! I love Santana and didn’t think I had missed anything. This is an awesome song and well done by both Michele Branch and Carlos Santana. I love the fun facts about Tina Turner, etc. Thanks for sharing!
