#Review “Criminal Misdeeds (A Carrie Shatner Mystery Book 1)” by Randee Green

Criminal Misdeeds cover

Criminal Misdeeds

4/5 Stars!

Good or bad, we don’t get to choose our family. For Caroline Diamond Shatner, it’s a bad thing wrought with headaches and much stress.

The Shatner clan and law-abiding can’t be used in the same sentence without the word not being included. As a detective in the local sheriff’s department, Carrie spends most of her time cleaning up their messes and keeping them out of jail.

Criminal Misdeeds is a fun read and for those of a certain age, it’s difficult to read of the antics of the Shatner family or their feud with the Palmer tribe without the vision of Boss Hogg and the Dukes of Hazzard or the Beverly Hillbillies’ Clampett gang and Bugtussle coming to mind.

Things get worse when after her family’s New Year’s fireworks celebration, Carrie finds a body in a dumpster. Her mind races to try to figure out what happened and how she can protect her family but in the end, she does the right thing.

And the twists and turns began.

This read is full of crazy characters on both sides of the feud… and the law. Except for Carrie’s uncle Houston, most were likable. What I didn’t like was they all expected Carrie to cover their crimes and misdeeds even if it meant destroying evidence… like dead bodies.

The college-educated and experienced crime scene investigator only fueled the fires because she did cover for them. In her defense, she explained she never did anything bad, just shredded a few parking tickets and manipulated a few people out of testifying. Carrie loved her huge crazy, southern family and coming from one myself, I get that. It was a stumble in the read for me in the beginning though that she wanted to be everything to everyone. It was a thin line she walked, and she didn’t do it well. Was good to see her evolve into her own.

And it wasn’t just Carrie—her uncle (cousin) was the (spineless) sheriff and her grandfather, great-uncles and late father all had careers in law enforcement. How did that happen?

I’m giving her a pass though because the humor was first-rate. Carrie has a snark-queen thing going on and deadpans more than a few great one-liners during the investigation.

Because of the scope of the investigation, Texas Ranger Jerrod Hardy is brought in to lead the case and gets dumped in the middle of the Shatner/Palmer madness. He’s heard the rumors of Carrie covering for her family and doesn’t know whether to kiss her or arrest her.

Will he get to do both?

Just when the murder investigation appears to stall, another body is found… and things turn dangerous.

Cozy mystery lovers will get a kick out of this read, especially when they hear the full names of some of these folks… and the names of some of the tunes sung by the Flaming Outhouses!

Enjoy!

Synopsis:

As far back as the Shatners can be traced, they have been breaking the law and running from it. It’s a family tradition. Now Carrie Shatner is a detective and crime-scene technician with the Wyatt County Sheriff’s Department in Eastern Texas. Over the years, she has tried to distance herself from her family’s criminal activities. But that is easier said than done.

The Shatner family is celebrating New Year’s Eve at the Wyatt County Fairgrounds in their usual style: illegal fireworks, homemade moonshine, and a near brawl. After shutting down the party, Carrie does a final sweep of the fairgrounds and finds a dead body in a dumpster.

Good news: the dead man is not a Shatner. Bad news: the Shatners are now suspects in a homicide investigation. Soon the fairgrounds are overrun with law enforcement, including Sergeant Jerrod Hardy, a Texas Ranger. The victim is Kyle Vance, Carrie’s ex-boyfriend and a member of the Palmer family, who have been feuding with the Shatners since the Civil War.

Despite serious misgivings, Hardy allows Carrie to help him investigate. He knows she physically couldn’t have beaten Vance to death, but he wonders if she is covering for a family member.

Read an excerpt:

CHAPTER ONE

I come from a long line of criminals.

Moonshiners, rumrunners, and drug dealers. Horse thieves and carjackers. Bank robbers, burglars, pickpockets, and con artists. And then there has been the occasional killer. You name it, whether it’s a felony or a misdemeanor, somewhere along the line a member of my family has committed it.

As far back as the Shatner family could be traced – from southern England to the mountains of western North Carolina, and now to the Piney Woods of East Texas – we had been breaking the law. And running from it, too.

It was a family tradition.

You see, the Shatners have never swum in the baby pool of life. We’ve always been out in the deep end, and we jumped in headfirst.

As for me, every day I fight my genetic predisposition to break the law. Some days I’ve been more successful than others. You see, I can’t break the law when I’m the one who is supposed to be upholding it.

My name is Carrie Shatner, and for the last three-and-a-half years I have worked as a detective and crime scene technician for the Wyatt County Sheriff’s Department in East Texas. That would put my Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Sam Houston State University to good use except there wasn’t a whole heck of a lot of serious crime in Wyatt County. I mainly sat behind my desk all day, twiddling my thumbs, playing Sudoku, and keeping up with my various social media accounts.

While my official job was to process crime scenes and deal with all parts of criminal investigations, my unofficial job was to cover up my family’s illegal activities and keep them out of jail. I’d be the first to admit that what I have been doing wasn’t ethical. It was probably also criminal. I tried not to think about that too much. To be honest, I tried not to think about any of it too much. Most days I felt like quitting my job. Family obligation prevented that.

I’m not saying that all of the Shatners have been hardened criminals. Sure, most of the older ones were. But at least some of the younger ones shied away from the family business and seemed to be sticking to the straight and narrow. And they were the reason why I do what I do. Yes, I clean up the crimes of the guilty. But I do it to protect the innocent.

These days, the laws my various family members break have been fairly minor ones. Okay, some were still kind of major. But it was nothing compared to what we used to engage in. I mean, I’m pretty sure we were no longer involved in contract killing or organized crime.

What I did know was that my great-uncles had a moonshine still out in the woods and a marijuana crop concealed in a bunch of old Cold War bomb shelters. Every time I caught one of my family members selling the homebrew or the pot, they would promise me it was the last time. I didn’t believe them. I didn’t arrest them either, because I knew it wouldn’t stop them. It would also infuriate the rest of the family. And, while tempting, that wasn’t a risk I was quite willing to take. At least not yet.

Occasionally, one of the younger Shatners would steal a car or deface some public property or get busted for underage drinking. The older Shatners were always getting nabbed for public indecency and public intoxication. Some of them were also heavily involved in insurance scams. And then there had been the occasional assault. But we hadn’t killed anyone – accidentally or on purpose – in years. Or, if someone had, I didn’t know about it.

When you got down to it, the majority of the bad things that the Shatners have done were just plain dumb. And, as far as I knew, being stupid wasn’t illegal. We would have been in serious trouble otherwise.

I don’t want you to go into this thinking that all of the Shatners were bad people. Most of them have just been a little misguided.

At least that’s what I kept telling myself.

Until I found the body.

#BookBlitz “Wild Thoughts (Brooks Family Book 3)” by Delaney Diamond

It started with a little white lie…
Lindsay Winthrop’s weekly podcast on sex and dating has garnered thousands of listeners Wild thoughts coveracross the country, thanks to experience with a loving fiancé she’s been with for years. Except, her husband-to-be doesn’t exist, and now she’s in a bind. With a book deal on the line, she has to find a man fast, and Malik Brooks might be just the man she’s looking for.

If he knows what’s good for him, he’ll stay away from her…
A few years ago, Malik gave up sex and now works hard as a metal sculptor. In doing so, he’s created enough pieces to fill a gallery, and his vow of celibacy has kept him focused. When a major deal falls through, Lindsay makes him an offer he can’t refuse, and all he has to do is pretend to be her fiancé. Sounds easy at first, but after one kiss, he wants more. Then things really get interesting.

EXCERPT

Lindsay exited the soundproof booth and went to her office. She had a lot of work to get through today. Her first book centered around the dos and don’ts of dating, finding the right man, and how to make sure you were dating-ready. The next one, The Sexy Diva Talks Sex, would focus on having a healthy sexual relationship.

She’d spent the past few weeks sorting through transcripts of her past shows for gems to include and had already completed an outline, which her Bear Publishing editor accepted. Now she was in the writing phase, and she had a deadline set on her calendar. But she was having a hard time getting words on paper. She was being silly but couldn’t help it. Despite having a highly anticipated book with great pre-release buzz, she couldn’t get rid of the knots in her stomach and worried that once the general public bought their copies, they might not like what she had to say. Which meant writing books two and three were a waste of time.

Her phone chirped. She’d received a text from Malik.

Malik: I want to see you.

Lindsay picked up the phone and leaned back in her chair, a smile coming over her face.

Lindsay: So?

Malik: Bring your ass over here.

Lindsay: Don’t you have sculptures to sculpt? I don’t want to be a distraction.

Malik: Too late for that.

Lindsay laughed to herself, swiveling in her chair as she contemplated a reply.

Lindsay: I’m working. You expect me to drop what I’m doing in the middle of the day because you say so? That’s not how this works. That’s not how any of this works.

Fingertip between her teeth, she giggled to herself, waiting for his reply.

Malik: You have until 2 to get here.

Lindsay: And if I’m not there by 2?

He seemed to take forever to respond, but she kept her eyes on the screen until he did.

Malik: Then I’m coming to get you.
