Song Lyric Sunday | “Boogie Oogie Oogie” – A Taste of Honey

Song Lyric Sunday was created by Helen Vahdati from This Thing Called Life One Word at a Time and author Jim Adams from A Unique Title For Me is our current guest host. For complete rules or to join in the fun, click here.

This week’s theme is  Boogie/Rock/Rolling Stone.

~~~~~~~~~~
Released in the summer of 1978,  Boogie Oogie Oogie was the debut single from the self-titled debut album of A Taste of Honey. The song became an extremely popular crossover disco song with lyrics urging listeners to “boogie oogie oogie till you just can’t boogie no more”.
Boogie Oogie Oogie topped the American pop, soul and disco charts, and eventually sold over two million copies, and has become one of the most recognizable songs from the disco era.
The band got the idea for this song when they played a show at a military base. It was a tough crowd, and the audience was not responding to their songs. Lead singer Hazel Payne admonished them from the stage: “If you’re thinking that you’re too cool to boogie, we’ve got news for you. Everyone here tonight must boogie and you are no exception to the rule.” Afterwards in her hotel room, bass player Janice Marie Johnson wrote down the line, thinking that it would be a good song lyric.
Johnson came up with the famous bass intro when she was warming up before the recording session, unaware that she was being recorded.
FUN FACTS:
  • Limited edition colored vinyl releases were issued in some nations. In Mexico, the record was red, and in France it was honey colored.
  • In the late 1990s, the song was used in a national U.S. campaign advertisement by Burger King.
  • The song was also used in a campaign for Rold Gold Pretzels (featuring the actor Jason Alexander) in the mid-1990s.
  • The group was awarded two platinum records for the single and album, and won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist at the 20th Grammys on February 15, 1979.
The video is a live performance from—don’t everybody get up and dance at once—SOLID GOLD! 😀
Enjoy!
  1. I love A Taste of Honey! My favorite song from them is their cover of “Sukiyaki” which featured Hiroshima’s own June Kuramoto on the koto. I love the song that you picked out because A Taste of Honey is amazing.
