This week’s theme is  Floor/House/Roof/Walls.

~~~~~~~~~~
 Recorded by Dionne Warwick, and written by the team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David for the 1964 film of the same name, starring Shelley Winters and Robert Taylor, A House Is Not a Home was a modest hit in the United States for Warwick, peaking at #71 on the pop singles chart as the B-side of the top 40 single, You’ll Never Get to Heaven (If You Break My Heart).
The song was covered by several artists with modest success, but it became an R&B hit when Luther Vandross included it on his 1981 debut album, Never Too Much. A House Is Not a Home became one of Vandross’ signature songs, and his performance of the song at the 1988 NAACP Awards telecast would Warwick to tears.
FUN FACTS:
  • Following the original singles by Warwick and Brook Benton, Bacharach himself recorded the song for his 1965 debut Hit Maker!: Burt Bacharach plays the Burt Bacharach Hits.
  • British singer Lulu recorded the song for her 1969 album Lulu’s Album.
  • In 2005, Aretha Franklin recorded it for the tribute album So Amazing: An All-Star Tribute to Luther Vandross. The song won her the Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Performance at the 46th Grammy Awards, her second in the category.
The video is Luther’s live performance from the 1988 NAACP Image Awards, and yes, there are shots of Dionne Warwick.
Enjoy!
  1. I have heard of Warwick’s version before, someone had it on one of their blog posts. I love Luther’s touch on the classic as he makes it his own. And you can see that Warwick is proud too in the video.
  2. Poor Luther! I saw him in concert back in the day and it was one of the best shows I ever went to! Second row in a small theatre(Westbury Music Fair) we sat right behind his family. I never sat down once! Such a funny man too!💜
