In my first book, STOLEN OBSESSION, I set out to write a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants romance. What I ended up writing were unlikeable characters in a work of women’s fiction—with five different sub plots. My developmental editor easily caught my errors and recommended that I pick one main plot and work a single story per novel. With all of the sub-plot ideas, I gravitated to a longer series with my main character, Annalisse Drury.
The unpleasant experience of tearing my original story apart convinced me to outline each book first so I’d have a roadmap to travel. The way I work each book now is to write scenes/chapters on 3×5 cards, then keep an adjoining notebook with the smaller details, chapter by chapter, filling in the foreshadowing as I go. In addition to the cards and journal, I also create a folder with character sheets for each person in my book. Their likes, dislikes, personality quirks, attributes, descriptions, etc. In that way, I can refer to this cheat sheet for future books and keep my characters from veering off in the wrong direction or mixing up their personalities.
When I read interesting passages in books, I also make small notes. The way in which authors drop backstory and use their senses to move the story forward interest me the most. I keep that special notebook on the coffee table for new story ideas as they come to me, or from scenes in movies. Sometimes scenes come to me in my dreams!
Maybe it was the journalist in me, but if life taught me anything, it’s that nothing is free.
When nepotism cost me the coveted position of Editor-in-Chief at the Hamilton Herald, I was pissed. And when I brought my complaints to the advisors, I was forced to quit. So, I was going into my senior year with a major chip on my shoulder. Although I kept my composure in public, inside I was fuming. The powers that be had officially ruined my life. As a journalism major, fired from the school paper, my future looked a little less bright. So when I was selected as a woman of V, my desperation superseded my moral compass and I accepted without hesitation.
V would give me access to more opportunities than the Herald ever could.
V would take my career to heights I never even considered.
V would change my life for the better.
V would have me sabotage my enemies and leave their ashes in my wake.
I just didn’t consider the collateral damage.
But like I said, nothing is free.
People always want to know what V stands for. For me, V stands for vengeful.
He’s living with a curse.
Centuries ago, his ancestors were cursed to ruin the lives of the women they fell in love with. Because of this curse, Shao Tian has always avoided love and relationships. He even went as far as leaving his home country to avoid running into his fated mated. He didn’t realize until it was too late that fate was steering him right into the arms of the woman meant for him. He found her in Atlanta Georgia. She’s everything any man could ever want in a woman. However, he’s forced to push her away. He’d rather have her hate him than love him. Loving a beast like him would only ruin her. Just like not being able to love her was going to ruin him. However, that’s a fate he’s willing to accept in order to protect her. What Shao failed to realize, was that destiny couldn’t be avoided.
This Christmas, the woman of his dreams is going to teach him a lesson about love, forgiveness and hope.
