Devils Need Love Too!

From the beginning of Avarice and moving on to Avarice Unforgiving, the list of growing questions keep the reader engaged and on the edge of their seat. A few bits and pieces of answers are tossed out in book 2, but they only serve to ignite more questions! Avarice Unleashed answers all questions… in ways the reader will never see coming.

Saphiel is gone and in her quest to find-in her mind… rescue-him, Kameo Kross must accept even more incredulous truths. It’s all or nothing, and Kami finally accepts she cannot be without her devil.

This is such a well-developed character! Even though the truth was Kami had nowhere to go, a lesser female would have tried. The seemingly endless situations of peril had ME on edge, but Kami rose to the occasion! Early in chapter two, she thought, “…she was getting really tired of being abducted” and “How many times was one person supposed to find themselves in a potentially life-threatening situation in the same week?” HA! Score Kameo Kross! Not fearless… but fierce!

Determined to find her man… er, devil, Kami finds out someone she once trusted is not even close to whom she believed them to be. It is then Kameo Kross understands despite the eons-old thought of demons and devils being vile and evil entities, the avarice of humans makes them much worse. A devil never threatened her life… but humans did.

Retribution is swift and I must say… justified. If you don’t want a devil to bother you… don’t bother him! Kami also finds out how deeply she was betrayed by someone she once cared for and takes no issue with the punishment given.

Kami’s roommate, Zoe Bankes, is front and center, and oh, so much fun! Big nods to the author for another strong female character! Her girlfriend banter with Kami is on point, and she doesn’t sugar-coat her personality for Saphiel! Zoe is the ultimate BFF because she will always tell you the truth whether you want to hear it or not, and she always has your back… even if demons are involved!

Kami is apprehensive as Beltane approaches. Even Saphiel has doubts. Everything could change… something neither of them wants. Will they survive?

This is a complex, challenging read and not for the faint-of-heart. If you’re easily offended, please don’t read this. Take heed of the author’s disclaimer. This isn’t comfy, cozy, or warm. It is challenging and even shocking in some areas. But, everything in this read has meaning… EVERYTHING. Nothing is gratuitous or a last minute add-in. It is often said one must suspend belief to read fiction. For the Avarice series, I disagree. Grab your beliefs and hold them close. You’ll need them.

Avarice Unleashed is a fitting conclusion to an epic series. Kudos to the author for delivering such a complex, detailed three-book story, and doing it in less than a year.

I stepped way out of my reading comfort zone for this series and I’m glad I did. Do I want to be Kameo Kross? No way! But, I am happy for her. She found what she’d spent two lifetimes searching for… and isn’t that the heart of any romance novel?

Indulge in a little avarice – no judgments here!

A few moments passed before the sound of a door opening and closing quietly cut through the room. About fucking time!

The hood was yanked off her head, but not by the one standing ten feet away, facing her. Panting, she quickly scanned the room without moving her head. There were at least seven Legion standing guard—three on either side of her, plus the one who’d removed the hood and remained behind her shoulder. Had they been there all the while? Probably. Bastards. None of them mattered, at any rate. It was the six and half-foot golden god with ice-blue eyes and a face sculpted for sin standing directly across the room that mattered.

He wore a light-gray modern suit with an old-fashioned flare—a vest, complete with pocket watch. It did nothing to detract from the raw power he emanated. His dirty blond locks were brushed arrogantly away from his face, too long to be professional, but she’d dare anyone to tell him that. His eyes were like the winter; blue death with a frosty coating, encircled by a midnight ring. They drank her in with something close to pleased malevolence.

“Mmm, now that’s the face that belongs to a woman in chains. Mascara tears and ruby red lips,” he broke off with an aroused sound of approval. “You look absolutely tragic, Kami. May I call you Kami?”

She knew better than to answer. His voice was smooth as whiskey. A velvety spell designed to wreak havoc on his victim’s minds. She doubted he’d ever uttered a single syllable of sincere flattery in his entire existence. No, much like Saphiel, this Devil got his pleasure from making others suffer. Tremendously. She could feel his sadism woven into his potent presence. Her inner masochist had radar like that.

Flashing a quick smile of amusement, he clucked his tongue. “Clever, too. I’m almost envious that one of my wayward brethren have already claimed you. I think I could have enjoyed toying with you for a while.”

Kami visualized a giant, icy dragon batting around a helpless kitten and tried not to shudder.

Pushing the door open to the master suite, Saph shoved her forward with a swat on her ass. “Get undressed. Now.”

“When you say ‘like us’?”

“The correct answer was ‘Yes, Sir’ followed by the shedding of clothing,” he stated, closing the door and stalking toward her in that confident, predatory way. “Would you like to try again?”

“Yes, Sir,” she exhaled breathlessly, hating how weak her knees felt just from that simple reprimand.

Kicking her shoes off, she unbuttoned and removed her jacket to drape it over the chaise. She was about to lift the silk camisole over her head when her phone rang. Digging it out of her coat pocket, she saw it was Zoe. Probably wondering if she’d made it back to New York yet. Kami set it aside, letting it ring. She could call her bestie back when Saph was finished with whatever he had planned.

“Who is it?”

“Zoe,” she answered. “I can call her back.”

Lifting the tank over her head, she tossed it in the direction of where-the-fuck-ever, which had Saphiel arching a brow. She’d already gotten into trouble once for just flinging clothing. They both knew that now she was just asking for it. When her phone started ringing again and Kami saw it was still Zoe calling, her stomach pitched.

“Something’s wrong,” she muttered as she snatched it up and answered it. “Zo?”

“Oh my God, Kam, someone broke in,” Zoe rushed out in a thick, liquid voice indicating she was crying. “They took everything! My laptop, the TV—who the fuck would want our TV?—and your room is completely trashed.”

That’s Kami’s first instinct when shit gets a little too real for her peace of mind.
Kink was supposed to be an escape, a release, but her mysterious Dom robbed her of that and there’s no going back. Her job was supposed to be an accomplishment, a step forward, but Mr. Kress took that from her and twisted it to his own design.

They want her to submit.

If Kami had her way, they’d both be kissing her ass on her way out the door.
Now, there’s a new threat hanging over her head. An unknown enemy wants to expose all of Kami’s sordid, depraved secrets to the media. Little do they know, that even she has no clue who in the hell she really is…but someone does.

Someone who’s about to reveal an incomprehensible tale. A truth that will unravel Kami’s entire life at the seams. Everything she’s ever believed will be altered as she’s thrust into a world she’d never feared existed, and only one undeniable fact will ring through the loudest:

Running had never been an option.

“No, Sir. I said, right away, Sir,” she smiled brightly.

He gave her a dark smirk. “Cheeky.”

His eyes swept down her body and back up again. By the time they landed on her face, that smoldering deviousness was back. Fuck. That was worse. She’d rather him bend her over the counter and whip her ass, because now she was going to be squirming in anticipation until he revealed his kinky plans on the plane. Pivoting in the doorway, he gestured for her to lead the way.

“Always the gentleman,” she sighed.

His arm curved around her hips from behind to stop her.

“Oh no, baby girl. You know me better than that. I don’t allow you to go first, because you’re a lady. I insist you go first, because I keep an eye on what’s mine, and I like you aware of the fact that I’m right here,” his hot breath molested the nape of her neck. “Where I can take whatever I want, whether you see it coming or not.”

Embers of lust sparked through her, heating her veins. His words and nearness sent erotic shivers in every direction. Kami’s lips parted on a ragged breath and the need…it was crazy how badly she could need him.

“Okay, Sir, I’m sorry,” she apologized.

“Mmm,” his lips brushed over her ear, intensifying everything. “As if that changes anything.”

5/5 Stars!

Avarice Unforgiving is exactly that–unforgiving. Book 1 was Cat in the Hat compared to this continuation. Just when I thought I was on the same page with this author and had delved into the psyche of Kameo Kross, and figured everything out, this read slapped me in the back of the head and said, “Nice try.”

But I wasn’t alone. Kameo herself has many questions she, nor anyone else can answer. At least, not anyone who’s willing to answer… not yet.

On a roller-coaster of emotions and need, Kameo is caught between her mysterious Dom and her ruthless boss. Both men feed the degrading submissiveness which is her joy and her shame. And then there are the jumbled memories of her ‘Bull Man’ and Halloween which still torment Kameo.

Not one who believes in happiness, Kameo feels that even if she gets what it is she’s been searching for, she won’t be allowed to keep it. That agonizing thought drives her to a decision–walk away.

Easier said than done. Honestly, she never had a choice.

Kameo finds out someone knows of her past–the bad and… the bad–and even the circumstances of her birth, and is out to blackmail her boss, Kress, and ruin her. Not believing she can sink any lower, Kameo is still appalled at the way the information is delivered… and where.

M.W. Kress. An enigma unto himself. I had thought certain things through about him from book 1, but even my twisted mind didn’t go… there.

While trying to understand how and why she has become someone’s target, Kameo must reconcile with new revelations. The circumstances of her birth are not what she’s believed all her life, and she’s not whom she thought she was. Well, actually, she’s not sure who she is. Kameo has to open her mind to things ‘normal’ people would never believe. Even with doubts still pulling at her, Kameo knows what she’s seen… and experienced… is real.

With mild trepidation, Kameo decides to accept what is offered and steps out on Faith. (Did I really say, ‘Faith’?) This is when the story is bum-rushed by a tornado of a plot twist that left me just staring at the screen! Trying to kick start my brain, I proceed to the last chapter… and the annihilation of my brain was complete. I have no words.

Avarice Unforgiving is a complex, tightly written story–there is no wiggle room. And you will wiggle. It will make you squirm. Much of the world building includes things many of us have been taught or read. Avarice Unforgiving will challenge you.

Of course, it is a cliff-hanger! This author…maaan! Book 1 left me hanging on with two hands. Now, I’m hanging on with one hand…and reaching for book 3! There is a disclaimer at the book’s beginning–please read it! This is not a comfy, little read. Though short in length, you will not “breeze” through it. Much like Kameo Kross, you will be tormented… and you will enjoy it. Go ahead and 1-click. No judgments here.

Devils Only.

It was a permanent note-to-self tattooed right above Kameo Kross’s panties, because anything less was a disappointment. Had anyone cared to issue the warning: Be careful what you wish for, she might have thought twice before wording it like an actual invitation.

Kami doesn’t fear pain, death or eternal damnation. She fears only submitting completely. A matter she usually has well in hand… until an unexpected detour into kink and a relentless bastard of a new boss decide to put all of her resistance–and chosen ink–to the trickiest of tests.

Monday night was book club night. Kami completely forgot about that until the ladies started showing up right around six o’clock. Zoe had spent the afternoon grilling her about her first day on the job, why she’d come home early and what it had been like dining with Owen Cethridge—information and snapshots that were already spread all over the social media sites thanks to the other diners at Delmonico’s. Kami’s name and position at Kress & Wolfe Financial were now e-tabloid fodder, with the speculations running the gamut from the innocent, to the most clichéd of Kami fulfilling the personal aspects of personal assistant quite thoroughly.

We all know M.W. Kress surrounds himself with beautiful women all of the time, so are we really that surprised, ppl? Just look at the rest of his immediate staff!

The best part about book club night? Free wine. Kami wasn’t shy about helping herself to a big glass of Sangria, before escaping to her room. She figured that was fair payment for answering the ladies’ rapid-fire questions on the run. After giving herself time to unwind, she started going back over her notes from the intern interviews. Knowing they’d be combining them with HR in the morning, she wanted to make sure they were both sensible and legible. Blinking up from the paper, she wondered if Jake would also be in on that meeting. Ugh. Lord, help me…

When her phone signaled, Kami narrowed her eyes at the clock. It was two minutes past seven. Seriously? Oh, she knew who it was. It was her Blackberry making noise and there only seemed to be one person on Earth who enjoyed making her life that miserable. Digging it out of her purse, she opened Mr. Kress’s new text.

I’ve finished all I could accomplish for today much earlier than I anticipated, so I’ve renewed our reservations at the Strip House for 8:00.

He was joking, right? Unfortunately, she knew he wasn’t. Though she was learning M.W. Kress was not completely devoid of a sense of humor, it still didn’t mean he ever took on the role of comedian. Hitting the reply button, she pointed out the obvious.

I have nothing to wear to the Strip House and all of the shops are already closed.

Crossing her fingers, she closed her eyes and prayed he would change his mind.

Nothing to worry about, I’ve already taken care of it.

Of course he had. Before she could respond, she heard someone knocking on the front door and her heart dropped to her stomach. No. No… he wouldn’t possibly… shit, the book club! Jumping to her feet, her pulse was thumping in her ears, as she raced out of her bedroom. At the same moment, Zoe swung the front door open and everything seemed to slow to a crawl. The boisterous female chatter dwindled to dead silence, eyes widening and mouths dropping open one by one. Zoe stumbled backwards when M.W. Kress, himself, stepped across the threshold, a garment bag draped over his arm, a shoebox clutched in his hand. His jade gaze scanned over the group of women gathered in the living room and he gave a shallow tilt of his head.

“Ladies,” he greeted.

Kami swore she heard more than one of them whimper like a schoolgirl. Then his eyes were locking right onto hers and it was at that precise moment an evil, self-deprecating part of her decided to meekly whisper: Psst, you’re wearing plaid pajama bottoms and a tank-top, not a skirt and heels. Just thought you should know…

It took all of her willpower not to bare her teeth as she continued forward and took the shoebox from him, then the garment bag. His eyes roamed over her comfy clothes, before returning to her face.

“I’ll wait for you in the car, Miss Kross,” he said, having no problems displaying that devious little smirk now.

“Chicken,” she muttered lowly, giving him a knowing glare.

He flashed another mildly amused look over his shoulder then disappeared around the doorjamb and beyond. Storming over, Kami kicked the door closed.

“Man, forget my book boyfriend, I want that one!” One of the women declared, signaling the end of the group’s silence.

Kami heard her best friend suck in a breath; a preamble to another round of twenty-questions. Pivoting on her heels, she pointed. “Eh-eh. Not a word.”

Tucking the shoebox under her arm, she snatched the glass of wine out of Zoe’s hand and went back to her room.

As much as she would’ve loved to take her sweet ass time just for spite, she couldn’t muster the balls to do it. She reminded herself, yet again, that she had no place feeling put out when she’d willingly signed up for the Always Available clause. That, and when she opened the garment bag to find a sleeveless, virgin wool dress by Armani, she couldn’t wait to put the damn thing on. It was classic black, with a pencil skirt that started about an inch below her breasts and hugged every curve down to mid-thigh. The loose top crossed at the thin belt and flowed over her shoulders, leaving her cleavage bare for all to see. She tried not to think too much about the fact that it fit perfectly, chalking it up to Mr. Kress either having a keen eye or blind luck.

It felt strange taking her hair down, but she looked too much like a woman heading back to the office with it still up, not on her way to dinner. Checking her reflection one last time, Kami took a steadying breath and left her sanctuary to the gasps and catcalls of the book club. Zoe even had her phone at the ready. Giving her an exasperated look, she posed for one shot, making the pixie squeal like an overzealous mom on prom night.

“Girl, you are one fine ass PA,” she complimented.

“Thank you,” Kami accepted, letting her bestie’s natural exuberance seep in, lighten her own mood. “I’m also going to be a fired PA, if I don’t hurry.”

Zoe snorted. “Okay,” she smirked skeptically. “Am I not waiting up?”

“I’m not dignifying that with an answer,” she sang over her shoulder.

Risking the temperamental elevator rather than the sweat-inducing stairs, Kami’s breath caught when the doors slid open to Mr. Kress standing right before her. Again, she found herself trapped in the intensity of his penetrating gaze. The box seemed to shrink in on her when he leaned into it, stopping the doors from closing with his hands while he continued his survey all of the way down her body and up again. Finally, he held one out for her to take. Her insides were already a hot mess. She wanted to blame the wine, but knew that was the only thing keeping her from shaking like a leaf when she placed her hand into his broad, masculine palm.

The feel of it touched along the fringes of her Halloween memories and she prayed she wouldn’t get hit with another new one. That reminded her of his Mr. Cethridge comment prior to dropping her off earlier and she prayed he wouldn’t bring it up again. Which prayer had more odds of failing, she wondered?

Leading her through the small lobby to the limousine, he never once complimented her on how she looked in the dress he’d picked out. He simply continued to stare at her and she hated how much more effective that was than words. Unable to handle the heady, thrumming pulse of her own attraction to him, she was the first to break eye contact once they were settled in the car.

“So, who are we meeting for dinner?” She was curious if it would be another celebrity of the banking world, or someone less conspicuous.

“No one,” he answered at length, forcing her to look at him again. “It’s not a business dinner, Kameo.”

What? The scant amount of courage Kami had scattered to the nearest corners.

“I wanted the opportunity to get to know you better, outside of the office,” he elaborated. “Outside of our professional obligations and settings. Dig a little deeper into that personal character.”

Pulse beating thickly, sluggishly, in her veins, she fell back on sarcasm out of self-preservation. “Yay, another interview.”

His gaze slowly raked over her again. “Don’t worry,” he said in a low voice. “You’ve already passed the most important one.”

No way in hell she was touching that. Not when his voice sounded like it was looking for a chunk of flesh to sink its teeth into. In fact, ever since he’d greeted her at the elevator, his demeanor had carried a note of something a bit raw and primal. Either that or her imagination was in an awfully saucy mood tonight.

I Love Puzzles!

5/5 Stars!

I was drawn into Avarice from the start. Kameo Kross is an incomplete puzzle. From the tragic circumstances surrounding her birth, to her obsession with Halloween, to her tattoo that throws down the gauntlet and issues a provocative challenge. We have several pieces of the puzzle – but none of them fit together. Kami’s submissive nature leads her on a still unfulfilled search for the ultimate…? Even she can’t put a name on what she’s looking for, but knows she’ll know when she finds it. But WHY does she feel this thirst for pain? Does her birth make her feel unworthy? Is she punishing herself for living?

Kami’s Halloween tryst with ‘Bull Man’ makes me anxious. Why can’t she remember what happened? Why does she only have flashes of that night at certain times? She also doesn’t remember exchanging numbers with Master D, but eagerly rushes to an evening of submission with him. Then there’s MW Kress – evidently God’s gift to the world of finance, and all things male and dominant. His reasons for hiring Kami made me immediately dislike him, and that 24/7 required availability sent my fertile mind into overdrive! Now he’s getting up close and personal and looking forward to the end of her probation? Um, why pray tell? What’s his game? And is there a connection between Kress, Master D and Bull Man? Will Kami’s roommate, Zoe, give in to temptation and tell all with a social media blast? What does Kami TRULY want? (I know I want a drink!)

Um, Kami’s last visit to see Master D – WTH? I cringed through most of it…and I couldn’t stop reading! Love how Kami got pissed off and ballsy…but I did not see that ending coming! Hopefully though, I’ll see BOOK TWO soon! *Nods to author*

A strong, well developed plot with complex characters challenges the reader to complete this puzzle, and you definitely have your work cut out for you.
