You Are Special cover

~~~
4/5 Stars!
It’s wise Josephine to the rescue again when first Vinnie then Tom admit to feeling useless with no purpose.
Vinnie can leap six times his height.
Tom is the best ball player.
They can see the special qualities in each other but not in themselves.
Vinnie the kitten felt useless because he compared himself to Tom, Muttley, and Jo. Tom felt useless and ugly because he compared himself to bigger dogs Muttley and Jo.
Just as Jo told Tom in book 5 that being different is no reason to dislike someone, in You Are Special, she points out those differences sometimes make us unique and should be celebrated.
Self-esteem and self-awareness are highlighted in this insightful and beautifully illustrated tale (don’t miss Tom’s eyes!) that parents won’t just read to their children but also learn from.
Enjoy!
Ginormous Jo’s You Are Special
Illustrated by S C Cunningham
 Ever wish you could ask someone the big life questions?
Tom and Vincent have a full list for their friend, Ginormous Jo. Being in a unique family of three dogs and a kitten, they are all the best of friends. Tom, a little white dog and Vincent, a small kitten, play quietly in the backyard until they start asking questions about life. Are they special? Why do they feel they don’t fit in?
They come up with a list to ask Ginormous Jo, the friendly senior dog in the house. She takes the two to heart and listens to their questions. The answers might be astonishing to the pair, but they are an excellent example of how you can learn from those wiser than yourself. But the important thing, of course, is they asked for help from an elder. She teaches them how they are already special. And that through recycling, they can help save the whole world!
This darling little picture book continues the Ginormous Jo serious stressing the importance of asking questions and being honest with your elders. It helps model how children should feel free to express their feelings to loved ones older than them, and follow the advice. It stresses how anyone can be special by their personal effort to better the world. This is a great book for any children’s library especially as a gift from a grandparent or older sibling.
Welcoming Arms cover
~~~

5/5 Stars!

A tiny ginger kitten named Vinnie arrives and upsets the happy balance Jo, Tom, and Muttley enjoy in their home.

Unsettled by all the changes, Tom dislikes the kitten and just wants him to go away. Vinnie is too different and doesn’t fit in. A kitten doesn’t belong in a home with dogs.

Wise Jo has to make Tom understand that while Vinnie is different from them, they’re alike in more ways than Tom realizes.

Book 5 in the Ginormous Series addresses the themes of tolerance, acceptance, and kindness and how we should always treat others well. It also emphasizes the benefits such as building familial/friendship bonds that could last a lifetime and learning new things we might otherwise miss out on.

Friendship and trust transform Tom into a proud guardian and strengthens Vinnie’s self-esteem.

Again, the author’s hand-drawn images play a big part in the story, but in Welcoming Arms the expressive eyes of the family pets give them a more human feel.

This one is a definite standout in the series.

Enjoy!

Silly Bullies cover

~~~
5/5 Stars!
Book four in The Ginormous Series addresses the timely subjects of bullying and personal safety.
Muttley’s withdrawn and quiet lately and it’s out of character for him. Jo worries and knows something is wrong even though Mutt says he’s okay.
He feels bad for lying to her; her worry intensifies because she knows he’s hiding something.
When he at last tells Jo he is being bullied, Muttley is ashamed and feels like a coward.
Jo’s response and explanation of bullying is spot on and even better than the cute ending because it’s a message children can never hear too much—victims are never to blame for the harassment and intimidation they receive… the bully is the one with the problem… and not speaking up or alerting someone to the problem only gives the bully more power.
Muttley feels better just sharing his secret with Jo, but her wise words also empower him to hold his head up and take action.
A powerful message and winning illustrations make Ginormous Jo’s Silly Bullies a beautifully wrapped gift that will last a lifetime.
Enjoy!
Jo's Secret cover
~~~

4/5 Stars!

Josephine has a secret she wishes the rude, selfish children next door knew.

The big, fluffy, white dog nicknamed Jo is wise beyond her years.

Vinnie, the kitten who also shares her home, is all ears when Jo finally shares her secret—the secret of liswat.

As Jo explains liswat, Vinnie wonders and worries if the children next door will ever learn the secret and its virtues. He also looks forward to applying liswat to his own life as he grows into a big, happy, clever cat.

The Ginormous Series delivers another timely life lesson in simple, easy words wrapped in a cozy, but informative conversation between family pets.

Children of all ages will understand the benefits of liswat and enjoy the beautiful hand-drawn images of Jo and Vinnie.

Ginormous Jo’s Secret

Illustrated by S C Cunningham

 In “Ginormous Jo’s Secret,” S C Cunningham explains the very link between listening and learning.  Though the huge, white, huggable dog called Jo wasn’t sure at first when her mum brought home a cuddly little kitten called Vinnie, she grew to love him with time. Vinnie was loving, playful and made her laugh a lot. Because Jo didn’t want Vinnie behaving like their noisy, shouty, and greedy neighbours, she introduces him to “Liswat,” telling him the great importance of listening and learning from others and the very secret behind her being a clever dog. Does Vinnie now know the meaning of “Liswat?”

4/5 Stars!

Rescue dog, Joe, has settled into a comfy life of lots of love and cuddles with the Tuttles and their young daughter, Mary.

He doesn’t understand their constant need to pick up his well-placed poo and place it in a trash bin, but it’s a small price to pay for such a good home.

When Mrs. Tuttle dog-sits for her sister, Joe’s perfect world is upended by the brash Mo.

She’s loud, aggressive, and always in his way. Ginormous Joe is miserable and cannot wait for the annoying fluffy dog to leave.

Innocent teasing by another dog reveals some truths hidden by both Joe and Mo.

This is an adorable story about first impressions, misconceptions, and personalities. Its simple, easy wording allows for any young child to not only understand the story but to apply the lessons to themselves.

And the illustrations are absolutely exquisite!

I had to re-read passages not because they weren’t clear but because I got lost in the artwork! The beautiful full-page drawings in warm colors enhance the story and will mesmerize any child… and adult.

Ginormous Joe’s Annoying Friend

Illustrated by S C Cunningham

Do you have a child that has trouble talking to people? Or expressing their feelings?

Here is a story about dogs with the problem of communicating their feelings, and how they solve it together.  The Tuttles enjoy walking their dog, Ginormous Joe. But one day, they bring home a new friend, another dog named Mo. Joe and Mo don’t seem to hit it off. She is always ignoring him and not wanting to play. One day, Joe realizes that all he needed to do was reach out and talk. This gave Mo a chance to tell him why she never would play with him. She was shy. The awkwardness between them evaporates, and they become friends, all from finally being brave enough to tell each other their feelings.

This is a great book to show children how to communicate to solve their problems and work through their feelings. It will make a great addition to any child’s home collection or teacher’s read-aloud library.

#Review “Isolation Junction” by Jennifer Gilmore

Isolation Junction cover

~~~
4/5 Stars!
While not a happy story or easy read, Isolation Junction is a no-holds-barred look at one woman’s struggle to free herself (and her children) from an abusive relationship and reclaim her life.
Rose speaks well of Darren in the beginning but the relationship descends into a marriage of control and abuse.
It’s always easy to stand outside and judge, even in fiction, but I was gobsmacked when she married him and wondered how bad it would get.
Pretty bad.
Darren isolated Rose away from family and friends, harassed her to quit her job and played the victim, all while with an eerie and evil passive/aggressiveness that Rose fell for. Actually, that’s not true. While there were some frightening moments, Rose allowed and tolerated much of Darren’s abusive behavior, believing (wrongly) it was easier.
She thought if she gave him his way, he’d be happy with her; if she were better, he’d be better; if she erased herself and made him the focus, they would have a happy home.
But that’s not how it works. Abusers are only happy… when they’re abusing—mentally, emotionally or physically, and Rose found this out the hard way. The lengths Darren goes to control and humiliate Rose simply because he can are nauseating. Every time I turned a page, I was hoping she’d pick up a brick and clean his clock.
An intriguing read that will have you pulling at your hair in frustration, but Tim, his family, and Rose’s family are major bright spots in heartwarming scenes.
Darren and his family? I have no words. When they were at the house… Rose got in the car… Tim pulled away… and the brother… OMG! I wish Tim had been driving a tank. And those sisters? Disgusting!
Readers of literary fiction, psychological thrillers, and women’s fiction will dive right into Rose’s story… just keep an eye on your blood pressure!
Enjoy!
~~~

First published in 2016, Jennifer has republished a second edition with the changes in Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

This is the republication of Isolation Junction and what a difference it is. A makeover with a new book cover, new content, with Pict Publishing, third person only (as opposed to third and first in first edition) and the incidents in correlating order.

~~~
Rose is the mother of two young children and finds herself living a robotic life with an abusive Isolation Junction coverand controlling husband. While she struggles to maintain a calm front for the sake of her children, inside Rose is dying and trapped in ‘Isolation Junction’.
She runs an online business from home, because Darren won’t let her work outside the house. But through this, she meets other mums and finds courage to attend networking events, while Darren is at work, to promote her business.
It’s at one of these events that Rose meets Tim, a sympathetic, dark-haired stranger who unwittingly becomes an important part of her survival.
After years of emotional abuse, of doubting her future and losing all self-confidence, Rose takes a stand. Finding herself distraught, alone and helpless, Rose wonders how she’ll ever escape with her sanity and her children. With 100 reasons to leave and 1,000 reasons she can’t will she be able to do it? Will Tim help her? And will Rose find peace and the happiness she deserves? Can Rose break free from this spiraling life she so desperately wants to change?
Based on true events.
