As a forty-one-year-old mother of three boys, working two jobs, Marya Berger doesn’t have the time or energy to consider a relationship. Single father, Dylan Barnes, the junior member of the La Plata County FBI team at thirty-three, has his focus firmly on his job and his son, Max. He’s certainly not looking to complicate his life, when he finds himself at his son’s soccer game, sitting beside the spirited brunette he can’t get out of his mind. Fate, however, appears to have different plans.

When an unspeakable crime draws the attention of the FBI, Dylan finds himself torn between his job and his instinctive need to protect Marya and her boys.

#Review “Covering Ollie (Police and Fire: Operation Alpha) (On Call, #2)” by Freya Barker

~~~
5/5 Stars!
This author delivers another suspenseful romance with just the right amount of spice, wit, and humor that shows second chances are possible no matter how long and hard you try to avoid them.
Widower Joe Benedetti has settled in as Durango’s new chief of police. Though he’ll never get used to department budget cuts, staff shortages or the political schmoozing that comes with the job, he knows he’s made a positive step toward a fresh start for himself and his two young sons.
He even lucks out when the snarky teenage girl across the street, Trinity, introduces herself and offers her babysitting services.
Trinity lives with her mom, whom Joe has noticed… from across the street, but notice is all it will ever be. He still mourns his wife, and he’s got sons to raise and a new job to handle.
Olivia “Ollie” Rizzo has worked hard to provide for herself and Trinity. The forty-year-old landscape architect even snaps a blade to the front of her pickup and does snow removal during the winter. She is independent, self-sufficient… and closed off.
Was good to see Ollie’s “disabilty” not treated as such. When it’s addressed, there is a discussion (sometimes ‘glib’), then it’s on to the next thing. Kudos to the author!
Joe and Ollie meet when Trinity has an accident, and it doesn’t go well, but they do settle into a neighborly friendship.
However, when a familiar face from the FBI comes calling with news that Ollie’s past is no longer in the past, Joe goes into protect-mode. Not just as the chief of police, but something about the quirky force-of-nature makes him want to keep her and Trinity safe.
Loved the pacing of this read. As the level of danger grows, so do emotions, and not just Joe and Ollie’s.
Joe’s boys, Ryder and Mason, are still adjusting to losing their mom, his parents show up and everyone has to adjust to Rita Benedetti (HA!), and more familiar law enforcement faces are trying to make Joe see what’s right in front of him while doing their jobs.
By far my favorite character is Grace, Ollie’s friend and confidante of eighteen years.
They met when Ollie was a young girl alone with an infant daughter and are as close as any family.
Though she’s seventy-five, the eagle-eyed Grace doesn’t miss much… or have any problem sharing her “bits of wisdom.”
But she goes to the top of my list when Joe and Ollie invite her to dinner on her Bingo night. When they arrive to pick Grace up she says, “This better be good. Tonight was my night to take the Bingo Queen title away from that ho, Lettie Driver, from the third floor. Bought all new dabbers for it too.”
OMG! I need Grace to have her own story! LOL!
If you follow the series by this author, you’ll love seeing the friendly faces of Tony, Dylan, Keith and even Autumn.
We don’t get to actually “see” Luna Roosberg, but her actions near the end of this read had me cheering.
There’s also plenty of folks to despise here with Josh Carey being slimeball number one. The wealthy mama’s boy’s unwanted attention to Ollie gives the word creeper new meaning, but Ole Josh will prove himself to also be the weakest link.
Covering Ollie is a solid, satisfying read full of strong characters making the best of bad situations (excluding Josh, of course). Even the children have intestinal fortitude! Loved how Trinity stepped up near the end. I highly recommend it.
Enjoy!
Covering Ollie (Police and Fire: Operation Alpha) is book 2 in the On Call series and follows Burning for Autumn and is available today – 5/14/19.
#Review “HWY 550 (Rock Point Book 3)” by Freya Barker
Title: HWY 550
Author: Freya Barker
Genre: MC Romance
Release Date: February 17th, 2019
Hosted by: Buoni Amici Press, LLC.
4.5/5 Stars!
It’s been a while since I got lost in a good MC (motorcycle club) read and HWY 550 proved itself to be a good choice.
A rash of violent robberies leads FBI agent Luna Roosberg to team up with MC president Ouray. It’s her case, and a gun used in one of the robberies belongs to Ouray. They’re not unacquainted with each other and their contempt… and attraction to each other is hard to hide.
These two flawed characters blend like oil and vinegar at first, but soon find out they’re more alike than they care to admit.
Ouray was a stray who grew up in the club. As its president, he’s moved the club away from illegal activities and into legitimate businesses, which is why finding out his gun was involved in one of the robberies isn’t sitting too well with him.
After suffering a violent attack in college, the diminutive Luna is closed off and tightly wound. Her existence is restless and her job the only thing which keeps her grounded.
Ouray and Luna are a great pairing, and it’s been a few books since I felt true chemistry between a couple and not something forced and formulaic.
I like my heroes and heroines smart, confident, and human, meaning, no one is right or in control all the time and you have to know when to let go.
These two got it right. They have passion not just for each other, but for their jobs and those closest to them.
I bumped heads with Luna a few times—I felt she was trying too hard. But I believe she did too, and a shifting mindset worked in her favor and won me over.
Good character development and plot keep the story moving forward without info dumps or loose ends. Suspense, multiple suspects and plot twists you don’t see coming make this a page-turner, but Sorrynotsorry about Rowtag, Britney deserved worse, welcome Jack, and everyone needs a Momma in their lives.
Familiar faces from the On Call series blend into HWY 550 and lend a few laughs and stellar support.
I definitely recommend this read.
Special Agent Luna Roosberg lives and breathes her job. Who needs a personal life when work is so rewarding?
When a new case sends her to investigate a local motorcycle club, covering as the president’s new flavor of the week, the lines between professional and personal quickly start to blur.
Although the Arrow’s Edge MC stays mostly on the right side of the law since Ouray took the gavel, the appearance of the feds at their gate can still rattle his cage.
When a string of robberies points squarely in Ouray’s direction, he’s forced to cooperate and put the blonde, prim and proper half-pint on the back of his bike.
With pressure mounting both in—and outside—the club, Ouray no longer knows who he can trust, except the woman who is shaking up his life—and stirring his blood.
#Review “Burning for Autumn (Police and Fire: Operation Alpha) (On Call Book 1)” by Freya Barker
~~~

4/5 Stars!

Billed as Romantic Suspense, Burning for Autumn delivers both and a first-rate whodunit!

A serial arsonist has the town of Durango, Colorado on edge. No one knows when or where he’ll strike next.

Amidst the chaos, clinical researcher Autumn McCoy and Chief of Police Keith Blackfoot have a budding relationship that gets off to a less than stellar beginning.

Thrown together again by mutual friends, they realize they like each other. But their time together always ends with another fire… and the fire hits too close to home.

After Autumn suffers a devastating loss and blow to her psyche, it becomes clear the fires are connected to her. But who? Why?

The deeper the story goes, the more of a page-turner it becomes. Someone is watching Autumn, which she should have realized early in the story because… the anonymous notes. DUH!

Keith and the small Durango Police Department reach out to the FBI for assistance before the next loss is Autumn.

As suspects are vetted, tensions—and emotions—run high.

The author does a great job of distraction and planting the seeds of doubt. By the time I was nearing the 80% mark, I was ready to arrest Jack, the tabby!

Excellent character development! I felt as though I knew these characters and where their heads… and hearts were.

While Autumn’s temporary assignment in Durango has caused her to leave what little life she had behind in San Antonio, she is making friends… slowly.

A bad childhood and a bad marriage keep her bottled up and closed off until she meets Keith.

I loved Keith. Actually, I loved all the men in this read because they’re just regular guys. Except for Stan (the mayor)—he’s an ass. And the arsonist—he’s a whack job.

The supporting female characters are spot on too. There is genuine affection and respect, but no one is afraid to call anyone else out on their crap. Very refreshing!

My only obstacle is Autumn. I struggled to like her.

With a nod to the aforementioned craptastic childhood and marriage, she was too caustic for me. Even worse, it felt forced.

Defense mechanism? I’m sure.

But Keith isn’t some chest-pounding Neanderthal strutting around grunting, “I’m man, you woman,” he’s a cop who’s also falling for the woman targeted by a madman.

Off the cuff, she was confrontational and annoying. Her determination to not be controlled, managed, or handled got old pretty quick for me because Keith wasn’t that guy. (When he laid his heart bare, I couldn’t breathe! What happened to the air?)

But when Autumn gave it thought before opening her mouth, she was human and genuine… and gracious. And those gracious moments were perfect and great romance!

As the dragnet closes in on the arsonist, Autumn goes back to the TSTL-mindset (but it isn’t permanent) which could lead her to lose Keith and her life.

But Keith is determined not to let that happen on his watch. Along with two great backups, he sets out to beat the serial arsonist and murderer at his own game.

The meaning of the title of the book falls from the lips of the whack job and it’s a gut punch because… Mr. Bartik.

Good stuff!

This is book 1 in the On Call series and I’m ready for book 2… which drops next month. Grab this one today so you’ll be ready too.

Enjoy!
