The theme for Song Lyric Sunday this week is “find/found.”

~~~~~~~~~~
You’ll Never Find Another Love Like Mine was written by the legendary songwriting team of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. They were the powerhouse producers behind most of what we today call the Philadelphia Sound, and they wrote this song specifically for Rawls. The track helped lure Rawls to Gamble & Huff’s Philadelphia International label, as he was impressed that they took the time to understand his voice and write something to suit it.
This is not so much a love song as a warning to the girl that if she lets this guy go, she’ll end up spending the rest of her life looking for someone just like him. The relationship is at a turning point, and the man won’t beg her to stay, but makes it very clear what will happen if she doesn’t: “You’re gonna miss my lovin’.” At the time, Kenny Gamble was going through a divorce from the singer Dee Dee Sharp.
This roller skating rink favorite was also a breakout hit for Lou Rawls; though he’d been releasing singles and charting in the top-40 for a full decade, this was his first visit to the top-10 and his first multi-chart #1.
This hit came late in Rawls’ music career, but he was a blinding flash of action nonetheless. He had a substantial acting career, playing bit parts on various TV series throughout the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s. This included Sesame Street, The Big Valley, Baywatch, The Muppet Show, and Martin, as well as voice acting in cartoons including Hey Arnold! and Garfield. Oh, also don’t forget the charity work with the “Lou Rawls Parade of Stars Telethon” to benefit the United Negro College Fund. Now on top of this, he had a music career in which he released 55 albums between 1962 and 2003. Did the man ever sleep?
Enjoy!
You’ll Never Find (Another Love Like Mine)
You’ll never find, as long as you live
Someone who loves you tender like I do
You’ll never find, no matter where you search
Someone who cares about you the way I do
Whoa, I’m not braggin’ on myself, baby
But I’m the one who loves you
And there’s no one else! No-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh one else
You’ll never find, it’ll take the end of all time
Someone to understand you like I do
You’ll never find the rhythm, the rhyme
All the magic we shared, just us two
Whoa, I’m not tryin’ to make you stay, baby
But I know some how, some day, some way
You are (you’re gonna miss my lovin’)
You’re gonna miss my lovin’ (you’re gonna miss my lovin’)
You’re gonna miss my lovin’ (you’re gonna miss my lovin’)
You’re gonna miss, you’re gonna miss my lo-o-ove
Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh (you’re gonna miss my lovin’)
Late in the midnight hour, baby (you’re gonna miss my lovin’)
When it’s cold outside (you’re gonna miss my lovin’)
You’re gonna miss, you’re gonna miss my lo-o-ove
You’ll never find another love like mine
Someone who needs you like I do
You’ll never see what you’ve found in me
You’ll keep searching and searching your whole life through
Whoa, I don’t wish you no bad luck, baby
But there’s no ifs and buts or maybes
(You’re gonna) You’re gonna miss (miss my lovin’)
You’re gonna miss my lovin’ (you’re gonna miss my lovin’)
I know you’re gonna my lovin’ (you’re gonna miss my lovin’)
You’re gonna miss, you’re gonna miss my lo-o-ove
Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh (you’re gonna miss my lovin’)
Late in the midnight hour, baby (you’re gonna miss my lovin’)
When it gets real cold outside (you’re gonna miss my lovin’)
I know, I know that you are gonna miss my lo-o-ove
Let me tell you that you’re gonna miss my lovin’
Yes you will, baby (you’re gonna miss my lovin’)
When I’m long gone
FADE
I know, I know, I know that you are gonna miss
Song Lyric Sunday | “Someone Like You” by Adele
The theme for Song Lyric Sunday this week is “search.”
~~~~~~~~~~

The end of a relationship can be devastating causing one or both parties to search for the reasons why they’re not together… or search for closure—and that’s what Adele does in Someone Like You when she tells her former lover (who’s moved on) “… Never mind, I’ll find someone like you.”

Someone Like You is the second single off of Adele’s sophomore album, 21. The track was inspired by the broken relationship that inspired most of 21. As the closing track of the album, lyrically, it speaks of Adele coming to terms with it. She wrote it with Dan Wilson.

The single is one of Adele’s most commercially successful singles. It became Adele’s first number-one single in the UK and second in the USA. As of 2015, it is the third most downloaded single of all-time in the UK and the fourth best-selling single of the 21st century.

Fun fact: This was the first pure-piano ballad to ever top the Billboard Hot 100. At the time of Someone Like You’s ascension, there were 1,008!

The song won the first ever Grammy Award for Best Pop Solo Performance, at the 54th Grammy Awards in 2012.

Someone Like You‘s music video was directed by Jake Nava and filmed in Paris, France. The video showed Adele walking alone through the streets with a sad look on her face. Critics praised the video for being simple and perfect for the sound of the song.

Someone Like You

[Verse 1]
I heard that you’re settled down
That you found a girl and you’re married now
I heard that your dreams came true
Guess she gave you things I didn’t give to you
Old friend, why are you so shy?
Ain’t like you to hold back or hide from the light

[Pre-Chorus]
I hate to turn up out of the blue, uninvited
But I couldn’t stay away, I couldn’t fight it
I had hoped you’d see my face
And that you’d be reminded that for me it isn’t over

[Chorus]
Never mind, I’ll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you too
“Don’t forget me,” I beg
“I’ll remember,” you said
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead

[Verse 2]
You know how the time flies
Only yesterday was the time of our lives
We were born and raised in a summer haze
Bound by the surprise of our glory days

[Pre-Chorus]
I hate to turn up out of the blue, uninvited
But I couldn’t stay away, I couldn’t fight it
I had hoped you’d see my face
And that you’d be reminded that for me it isn’t over

[Chorus]
Never mind, I’ll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you too
“Don’t forget me,” I beg
“I’ll remember,” you said
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead

[Bridge]
Nothing compares, no worries or cares
Regrets and mistakes, they’re memories made
Who would have known how bittersweet this would taste?

[Breakdown]
Never mind, I’ll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you
“Don’t forget me,” I beg
“I’ll remember,” you said
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead

[Chorus]
Never mind, I’ll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you too
“Don’t forget me,” I beg
“I’ll remember,” you said
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead

The theme for Song Lyric Sunday this week is “sleep.”

~~~~~~~~~~
I did that weird opposites thingy again with the theme this week so I could post one of my favorite songs, Awake by Josh Groban.
This song is about being in the moment in life. Not taking any moment you are presented with for granted. Groban wrote and recorded this song for his third studio album, also titled Awake. It did not make the cut for the actual album, so it was added as a bonus track. Awake did make the charts, just missing the top ten on the Hot Adult Contemporary listing.
The video is a live version from Groban’s Awake tour.
Song Lyric Sunday | “Brandy” – Looking Glass (1972)
Song Lyric Sunday was created by Helen Vahdati from This Thing Called Life One Word at a Time. For complete rules or to join in the fun, click here.
The theme for Song Lyric Sunday this week is “glass.”
~~~~~~~~~~

How’s this for following this week’s theme – a song by a group with glass in the name?

Looking Glass!

Their 1972 hit, Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl), was written and composed by band member Elliot Lurie and recorded for their debut album Looking Glass. The single reached number one on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Cash Box Top 100 charts, remaining in the top position for one week. It reached number two on the former chart for four weeks, stuck behind Gilbert O’ Sullivan’s Alone Again (Naturally), before reaching number one, only for “Brandy” to be dethroned by Alone Again (Naturally) the week after. Billboard ranked it as the 12th song of 1972. Horns and strings were arranged by Larry Fallon.

“Brandy” is found throughout popular culture, most notably in the films Lords of Dogtown and the 2000 version of Charlie’s Angels. It was featured prominently in the 2017 film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, where the song is featured as a focal point in the plot.

Interestingly, American birth registration data collected from the Social Security Administration illustrates a massive increase of American newborns named “Brandy” following the song’s 1972 release (from 353rd most popular in ‘71 to 82nd most popular in ’73).

FUN FACT: Barry Manilow’s Mandy was a hit by another group in England as Brandy, but when Clive Davis approached Manilow to do an American cover, Looking Glass’ Brandy was already a hit too so… Brandy from England became Mandy in America!

Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl)

There’s a port on a western bay
And it serves a hundred ships a day
Lonely sailors pass the time away
And talk about their homesAnd there’s a girl in this harbor town
And she works layin’ whiskey down
They say “Brandy, fetch another round”
She serves them whiskey and wineThe sailors say, “Brandy, you’re a fine girl
(You’re a fine girl)
What a good wife you would be
(Such a fine girl)
Yeah, your eyes could steal a sailor from the sea”Brandy wears a braided chain
Made of finest silver from the north of Spain
A locket that bears the name
Of a man that Brandy loved

He came on a summer’s day
Bringing gifts from far away
But he made it clear he couldn’t stay
No harbor was his home

The sailor said, “Brandy, you’re a fine girl
(You’re a fine girl)
What a good wife you would be
(Such a fine girl)
But my life, my love and my lady is the sea”

Yeah, Brandy used to watch his eyes
When he told his sailor’s story
She could feel the ocean fall and rise
She saw its raging glory
But he had always told the truth
Lord, he was an honest man
And Brandy does her best to understand

At night when the bars close down
Brandy walks through a silent town
And loves a man who’s not around
She still can hear him say

She hears him say, “Brandy, you’re a fine girl
(You’re a fine girl)
What a good wife you would be
(Such a fine girl)
But my life, my love and my lady is the sea
It is, yes, it is”

“Brandy, you’re a fine girl
(You’re a fine girl)
What a good wife you would be
(Such a fine girl)
But my life, my love and my lady is the sea
It is, it is, yes, it is”

Song Lyric Sunday | “Dreamin” by Vanessa Williams

The theme for Song Lyric Sunday this week is “picture/photograph.”

~~~~~~~~~~
Took a walk on the wild side of this week’s theme and came up with two great songs…about dreams – pictures in the mind!
1 – Originally performed by the family group, Guinn, Vanessa Williams recorded Dreamin in 1988  and released it as a single from her debut album, The Right Stuff. The single was Williams’ first top 40 and first number-one hit on the Billboard R&B chart, where it stayed at the top of the chart for two weeks. On the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart, “Dreamin'” peaked at number eight.
2 – Posthumously released as the lead single for her fifth studio album of the same name, Dreaming of You became one of the most popular and recognizable recordings of the late American Tejano singer, Selena Quintanilla, and has since been covered by various artists.
Dreaming of You peaked at number twenty-two on the US Billboard Hot 100 and it received the Broadcast Music Incorporated pop award for having two million airplay impressions in 1996, and was listed by a number of publications as one of the best songs recorded by Selena in her musical career. The Los Angeles Times recognized it as one of the top 10 singles of 1995.
Dreaming of You was originally written in 1989 for American R&B group The Jets, who turned down the recording. It became a hit for the Tejano singer, but sadly, Selena never got to perform the song. The video is a vignette of a young couple who run away together.
Dreamin’
For the life of me
I never thought that it could be
The way it stands right now
Emotions running high
Every night I wish that I
Could tell you how I feel
Those words are here in my heart
Oh but there is just one missing part
How to put it together
How to say it right
And let you know that
Every night
I’ll be dreamin’
Dreamin’
Hoping baby you will be there
I’ll be dreamin’
Dreamin’
Hoping baby you will be there
Let me take time out
To try and find out
If this could be real
Cause reality scares me
I’ve been living a fantasy
How should I feel
Those words are here in my heart
Oh but there is just one missing part
How to put it together
How to say it right
And let you know that
Every night
I’ll be dreamin’
Dreamin’
Hoping baby you will be there
I’ll be dreamin’
Dreamin’
Hoping baby you will be there
Dreaming of You
Songwriters: Francine Golde / Tom Snow
Late at night when all the world is sleeping
I stay up and think of you
And I wish on a star
That somewhere you are thinking of me too
‘Cause I’m dreaming of you tonight
‘Til tomorrow, I’ll be holding you tight
And there’s nowhere in the world I’d rather be
Than here in my room dreaming about you and me
Wonder if you ever see me, and I
Wonder if you know I’m there
If you looked in my eyes
Would you see what’s inside?
Would you even care?
I just want to hold you close
But so far, all I have are dreams of you
So I wait for the day, and the courage to say
How much I love you
(Yes I do)
I’ll be dreaming of you tonight
‘Til tomorrow, I’ll be holding you tight (‘Til tomorrow)
And there’s nowhere in the world I’d rather be
Than here in my room dreaming about you and me
Corazón, I can’t stop dreaming of you
No puedo dejar de pensar en ti
I can’t stop dreaming
Como te necesito
I can’t stop dreaming of you
Mi amor como te extraño
Late at night when all the world is sleeping
I stay up and think of you
And I still can’t believe
That you came up to me and said I love you
I love you too
Now I’m dreaming with you tonight
‘Til tomorrow and for all of our lives (‘Til tomorrow)
And there’s nowhere in the world I’d rather be
Than here in my room dreaming with you endlessly
Dreaming with you tonight
‘Til tomorrow, I’ll be holding you tight (‘Til tomorrow)
And there’s nowhere in the world I’d rather be
Than here in my room dreaming with you endlessly (I’ll be dreaming)
Dreaming of you tonight
Endlessly
And I’ll be holding you tight (‘Til tomorrow)
Dreaming with you tonight (Endlessly)
Endlessly
Endlessly
Dreaming
Song Lyric Sunday | “We’ve Only Just Begun” – The Carpenters
The theme for Song Lyric Sunday this week is “plan.”
~~~~~~~~~~

Some of the Song Lyric Sunday themes have truly been challenging but when I learned this week’s theme, one song immediately stood out to me.

If I had to choose a song to represent baby boomers of the 70s, We’ve Only Just Begun is it, hands down.

It was the theme of proms, senior classes, clubs, new businesses–even the U.S. Air Force used it in a commercial. And who among hasn’t been to a wedding with it as the theme or the newlywed’s first dance song?

So many roads to choose, sharing new horizons, working together day-to-day… it was all part of the plan.

Landing at number 405 on  Rolling Stone magazine’s list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998 for recordings “of lasting quality or historical significance”, the tune has quite a legacy for a song that began as a commercial.

We’ve Only Just Begun debuted within a wedding-themed television commercial for Crocker National Bank in California in the winter of 1970, with songwriter Paul Williams on vocals. Richard Carpenter recognized Williams’ voice (both were under contract with A&M Records) and asked for a full version. The rest is history… and pop culture!

Released on their Close To You album, We’ve Only Just Begun became the Carpenters best selling single, spending seven weeks at number one.  It also helped them to win two Grammy Awards in 1971: for the Best New Artist (The Carpenters) and Best Contemporary Performance by a Duo, Group, or Chorus (Close to You).

The video is not of me singing the song at my ninth grade graduation…. because that happened, but of The Carpenters during a television performance.

And just in case you’re not feeling ancient yet, boomers, keep in mind this song is two years away from it FIFTIETH anniversary! 😀 😀

Enjoy!
