#Review “Once Upon a Princess Duet” by Deborah A. Bailey

Once Upon a Princess banner

Fairytales were my first favorite childhood genre, and in my later years, I haven’t strayed too far from them. The list continues to grow of fairytale mash-ups, retellings, dark, and inspired versions. A few missed the mark, but most get it right. Once Upon a Princess Duet nails it!

In Heart of Stone, we have Leesa, princess leader of a kingdom in ruins. Those who killed her family and destroyed the land are gone too. Leesa ekes out a living for her grandmother and the people of her village the best way she can.

This leads Leesa to search for treasures at Silver Palace, also in ruins and once home to her betrothed who never returned from the war.

Leesa is caught by Willem, the gargoyle, self-proclaimed guardian of the castle ruins. He makes Leesa an offer—stay in the castle for three weeks and he will give her all she needs to care for her village.

This grownup version of Beauty & the Beast doesn’t deliver a wide-eyed, naïve ingenue and a loathsome beast, but a thirty-year-old woman who’s left her days of royalty and privilege behind and a snarky, supernatural creature who may or may not be just a bit pervy. *HA! *

The bargain is not an easy one even as a guarded trust grows between the mismatched couple.

Trouble arrives in the forms of Lester and Sir Kyle, who’s determined to take the castle’s hidden riches… and Leesa as his wife.

With problems temporarily abated, Willem releases Leesa from their agreement, insisting she leaves before the nefarious Kyle returns with backup. Leesa is reluctant to leave—she has come to care for the gargoyle—and wants to fulfill her part of the agreement… and perhaps even help free Willem from the enchantment which binds him to the castle.

Trouble returns, and it is chaotic. Leesa’s resolve weakens as she believes she’s lost someone else important to her. It builds to an excellent ending, which for me, could have gone on and on.

While she only appears in a few pages near story’s end, Polly, a no-nonsense barmaid from town, leaps to the top of my favorite characters list. Polly wasn’t up for any foolishness and did not suffer fools lightly.

In Beauty and the Faun, Kayla and her mother are taken in by her uncle after Kayla’s father dies.

Although they are equals, Kayla and Julia, her mother, are treated as servants…like Cinderella. The good-natured women don’t mind… much, as they both miss their life living in the woods with Christopher, Kayla’s late father.

When Julia fell in love with Christopher, a woodsman, her family didn’t consider him good enough for Julia and she had to choose—her wealthy family and easy life or poverty with Christopher. Of course, Julia chose love with no regrets. But illness took Christopher all too soon.

Now Kayla learns Sir Frederick, her uncle, and a habitual gambler is ready to marry her off to help settle his gambling debts.

The plan is to marry Kayla off to the son of a king. Usually a coveted betrothal, King Reynard has been unable to find a bride for his son because Reynard is a wolf-shapeshifter and his son… changes into things. The young prince is also said to be wild and disappears for weeks at a time.

Despite Kayla and Julia’s objections, the wedding plans proceed, so Kayla decides to solve her own problem.

Striking a deal with fellow servant, Jackon, Kayla plans to go into the village and find a job so she can take care of her mother and be away from Frederick’s control. Jackon tricks Kayla and leads her into an attempted kidnapping. Kayla escapes and eventually ends up with Del, a woodland faun.

Loved the twists and turns of this quick read which included a wedding ball, a fairy godmother and… pomegranate.

Leesa and Kayla are two great characters—women just trying to figure it all out. They’re not sitting around waiting to be rescued, but Prince Charming does arrive… in his own way! You’ll enjoy rooting for their happily-ever-afters.

I highly recommend these two engaging fairytale sendups. But, don’t buy them for your twelve-year-old. Yes, there’s sex, (but it’s not over-the-top). We grow up, why can’t our fairytales?

Enjoy!

#Review “Blood Awakening (The Immortal Sleepers)” by Miranda Nichols

Blood Awakening cover

4/5 Stars

Tyrian Blackwood is a member of the Hunter Administration, a thirteen-member council charged with keeping the realm of humans safe from the inhabitants of the other twelve realms of vampires, necromancers, sirens, shifters etc. Tyrian is a Vampire Hunter.

On the way to a council meeting, Tyrian meets bookstore employee, Kaelyn Hamblin. Their conversation is brief but meaningful and they will meet again.

Because they are fated mates.

Of course, nothing is ever easy, and before Tyrian can explain his life, their connection, and the fact he’s seven-hundred and twenty-two years old to Kaelyn, Tyrian’s eighteen-year-old charge (or Page), Caleb, is kidnapped and taken into the vampire realm.

Entering their own realm is a death sentence for a Hunter… unless they have the blood bond of their Medium (mate).

Here is where Kaelyn’s ‘awakening’ begins. It’s already known she lost her mother in a fire, never knew her father and grew up in foster care… now she’ll learn the rest of the story as Tyrian hurries to rescue Caleb.

I liked Kaelyn Hamblin. She’s pragmatic, not teary or wimpy. She’s taken the hand life dealt her and not done too badly for herself.

Tyrian Blackwood is also likable. His own backstory is as heartbreaking as Kaelyn’s and Caleb’s and helps you to understand him and his choices. Even the bad ones.

Orphan Caleb is the perfect sullen, snarky teenager, desperate for his guardian’s approval.

Ember (Kaelyn’s best friend), Lilith—a Witch Hunter (the only female Hunter), and Starla—a Druid (the HEAD of the council and its most powerful member) are strong female characters whose scenes of vulnerability enhance their characters, not portray them as weak. Big kudos to the author for these admirable characters.

Villain Cynric… is just nuts. But while he does some despicable things, I saw him more as an out of control loony pawn than evil. Think this could change though. The foreshadowing is epic.

The world building is effective. Realms, their inhabitants, Hunters, and the rules are revealed as the story progresses in good detail without any info dumping.

Where I stumble with this read is Tyrian and Kaelyn… together. They’re good together—say the right things, do the right things—but, personally, I never felt a chemistry. That smoldering, forever-and-a day type of love wasn’t there for me.

Also, the story is paced very well… except when Tyrian and Kaelyn are together.

Granted, when your H/h are together, it’s usually the part of the story you want to savor and relish. However, for me, the descriptive prose was exhausting.

Readers want to be in the scene; we want to be shown and not told, but how many descriptions for eyes are needed in the same scene? In the same book? Great scenes were ruined for me because of the endless prose describing the scene.

I love the details. They almost always enhance any story. But, I had to take breaks from this read because I was yanked from the scene too often by too many details.

It IS a good story. Traveling to other realms, battling in other realms… was all spot on. The unlikely bonds forged have meaning and show a depth of character. But, for me, the romance feels forced and just isn’t compelling.

There aren’t many resolutions before story’s end, but I wouldn’t call it a true cliffhanger. Lines are drawn in the sand, warnings are given… the battle is coming, and YES, I do plan to read book two, Awakened in Flame. A teaser in included at the end and it’s just enough to make you wonder!

I’m sure Fantasy, Dark Magic, and Paranormal Romance fans will enjoy Blood Awakening.

Special Note: Blood Awakening: The Immortal Sleepers is currently only available from the publisher linked below, and is not on Goodreads.

Blood Awakening cover

Title: Blood Awakening (The Immortal Sleepers)

Author: Miranda Nichols

Genre: Paranormal / Fantasy Romance

A war has been brewing in the shadows.

Kaelyn Hamblin never felt particularly extraordinary, growing up in a strong Irish household in the heart of Boston for most of her young life. Her humdrum routine remained markedly unchanged for longer than she cared to remember; until that day. The day when a beautiful stranger drifted into her hole-in-the-wall bookshop and changed her life forever.

Tyrian knew from the moment he locked eyes on her that she was the one. His one. The singular being within all of time and space that was made for him and him alone. His world was not one of niceties and pretty things; bringing her into it would be dangerous. But he would protect her. He had to. After all, it was foretold.

Worlds collide, marking the beginning of the end to an age long battle warring between the forces of darkness and light in the universe. The fate of all rests on the shoulders of a lone druid and her band of human hunters to quell the rising tide of evil threatening to overtake everything and plunge the connected realms into eternal darkness.

Heart of Stone Excerpt 2

One evening they sat in the library, two doors down from Leesa’s room. It was the only other room upstairs that wasn’t covered in cobwebs.

“What are you reading?” Leesa asked, as she looked up from the fire. “You’re quiet tonight.”

Willem sighed as he stretched out his long legs. “I’ve been sitting too long. I’m stiff.”

She didn’t understand why he insisted on sitting in the small chair across from the fireplace. “I asked what you were reading.”

“About the constellations. I want to know when The Archer will be overhead,” he said. “It will line up above the palace. By my calculations, it should be the day before the full moon.”

“What constellation is called The Archer?”

“A pattern of stars that look like a woman aiming an arrow. She’s sending them into her lover’s heart.”

“Why would she do that?” Leesa drew her legs up. Even though she’d arranged herself on one of the furs, the stone floor was cold and unyielding. Maybe she should’ve sat on the divan next to Willem, but she’d wanted to be closer to the fire.

“It’s an arrow of love.” He adjusted the oversized, leather-bound book on his lap. “Not to kill but to bind.”

That made no sense to her at all. “You use arrows to attack.” Leesa turned back to the fire. “I don’t think that archer likes her lover very much.”

“Love can be painful, Princess. It is an exquisite pain.” Willem closed the volume and stood up. “I hope my calculations are correct.”

“What are you calculating? Why is it important?”

“I will tell you later,” he said.

Leesa continued to stare into the red and gold flames. To her relief, she hadn’t seen any other visions since that first day.

Behind her, she heard Willem’s heavy footsteps, then a groan of pain. When she turned, he was bracing himself against the wooden bookcase with one hand, the other was behind his back.

“What is it?” she asked, as she came to her feet. “Are you hurt?”

Another groan, then he waved her away. “I’m just stiff. I need the sunlight to rejuvenate my muscles. I’ve been neglecting my usual post.”

“But we spend the day outdoors. Isn’t that enough?” she asked.

“It helps me, Princess. Don’t be concerned.” Willem straightened up. “Would you like to go riding tomorrow?”

“With you?”

“No, just you. Miral needs to run, don’t you think?” He gently lowered himself into the chair. “There’s a path by the gardens. You won’t be seen if anyone rides by the main road.”

Her thoughts went to the man in the carriage. The footman had seen her. She hadn’t told Willem about that, but maybe it was best not to reveal it now. It’s not like she’d been recognized.

EXCERPT

CHAPTER ONE

Jamestown, Virginia, July 1740

Tsura Harris lifted the hem of her green skirt and stepped up onto the wooden plank. She clutched her reticule in her right hand and reached for the rope with her left. The planked bridge swayed as the boat rocked against the seas. She stared at the water below. White-capped waves crashed along the ship’s hull, rocking the boat. She inhaled, forced her chin up, and took another step. She walked the short distance to the boardwalk, releasing the breath she’d held when her boot touched land. She planted both feet upon the wooden dock and set her shoulders, but the reminder of why she was here intensified the weight upon her chest. Despair was her shadow, and it was with her today.

“Sister!”

Her brother’s deep, masculine shout came from above.

She shaded her eyes from the hot afternoon sun and peered up at him. His stature always shocked her. Micah Walker was six foot with broad shoulders and strong arms, a spitting image of their father, Kade. His white shirt gaped open to show the tanned skin beneath, a sign of too many days out on the water. Long blond hair waved in the breeze. Her handsome brother had his pick of the ladies, but still hadn’t settled down. It was a shame. She knew he wanted children and a wife of his own, but his heart belonged to the sea and time would lend him those favors only when he was ready.

“You must wait,” he called and raced past his men carrying crates of goods onto the wharf.

She placed her bag onto the wooden walk and clasped her gloved hands together.

He reached her, his cheeks glowing and dark eyes lit with mischief. Before she could discourage him, he picked her up and swung her around. Her boots kicked the bag, knocking it over, as his strong arms held her tight.

Micah had always been affectionate. He never shied away from holding her hand, kissing her cheek, or teasing her like a brother would. He’d come to her side when she needed him the most. When her life had fallen apart, and she couldn’t see past her own misery to pick herself up. He had carried her, and she loved him for it.

“You cannot go off without wishing me well.” He smiled down at her.

“If you would simply release me, I’d be able to make it so,” she retorted. He was the only one, aside from her mother and father, who she allowed to touch her.

“Very well, nit.” He set her in front of him. The nickname he used for her was one of endearment and came from her pestering him as a child.

“Thank you.” She smoothed her skirt before bringing her eyes to meet his.

“You do not need to do this.”

She glanced away unable to stare at him any longer.

“Come sail with me.”

She shook her head. The urge to leave caused her legs to shake. She couldn’t be around him any longer. His cheerful disposition haunted her and made her think of things she’d rather forget.

“I know you don’t want to speak of this, but—”

“No, Micah.”

“Tsura, you need to forgive—”

“Forgiveness is not within my heart.”

“It surely is.”

She shook her head, careful not to release the many pins holding her thick corkscrew curls in a loose chignon.

“It is in all of us.”

She glared at her brother.

“Do not speak to me of forgiveness, brother. My heart is cold to it.”

His dark eyes watered, and she knew her words had hurt him, but she didn’t care. It was better this way—it was easier.

“Will you not reconsider?”

“No.”

“Please stay. I will protect you.”

Protection was not what she needed. She could care less if she died. It’d be a relief from the constant pain she felt each day.

“I should’ve taken you to mother and father.”

“Do not speak to them of my presence here.”

“They will understand.”

“Not one word.”

Micah sighed. “As you wish.”

“I must go.” Anger pressed on her spine, and she straightened.

His shoulders dropped.

“Be safe. Trust no one.”

She nodded.

“The King Series Book 3: Heartless” by Alena Des #Spotlight

Author Alena Des discusses the creation of Riley, the lead character in

Heartless, book 3 of her King Series.

Heartless cover

I created Riley in the second book of my Kings series as a dark angel and the brother of my main female character. He was supposed to be a side character, a character that played his role and then jumps back into non-existence. But Riley I created soon became much more. He was rebellious enough to take off on his own, defy my plans for him to be nothing more than a side character. Soon, he was backstabbing me as his creator, talking to my readers, making his secretive connections to a large fanbase. Every time he talked, he was mysterious, manipulative. I knew he was the King of Deceptions and soon began to believe he was playing with all of us.  Readers kept asking:  Is he good? Is he bad? Who is he?

The sexy, humorous and cocky angel soon had my readers panting after him. By the time I was done with my second book, I faced desertion by them unless I wrote his story, the angel who had captivated their hearts.  Oh, well…So, I was stuck with Riley. He almost screamed in my head as I was writing his book. I stopped apologizing to my readers for his vulgarity, rudeness, and shallowness. He couldn’t help it, he was the son of the Sex Goddess. And, I was merely his voice. Besides, my readers wanted to know more about him, right? This was it. They were free to hate him.

It didn’t really work that way. Riley effused a natural charm. Who am I kidding? There was nothing natural about it. Women were after him. And he just didn’t give a damn. I almost didn’t like him. Almost. But as I scratched the surface with Riley, I found out so much more about this dark Angel.

I knew I was dancing with death. But I was gonna play the game until it claimed me. And eventually, it would. There was no escape.”

I began to wonder: Who was he running from? And why was he behaving this way? I had to find out.

I needed help to bring out the fun, vulnerable side which was bottled deep down Riley. For that, I needed to save him from himself and from the one who was after him. I found the help I needed in Oriana. The woman who lived among the humans but was so much more. The woman who was immune to his sex appeal. The woman who held her own secrets. I knew she would be my savior. And, she would be his.

“Hi there, luv,” I said, turning on the charm. From up close, she was an even better catch. Though she was shorter and not as curvy as I desired, there was something about her which made me pause. “My name is Riley, baby.”

“Get lost, Riley,” the woman said.

I had misheard her. There was no other explanation.

“C’mon,” I said, making sure I touched her. It was done.

I had her. I was sure. “I’m rather impatient, honey. What’s your name?” I asked, knowing full well I would not remember it a few seconds after she told me. It was still polite to ask.

“My name is Oriana,” she said politely, but I noticed the sarcasm. “Now get lost,” she repeated. I watched in amazement as she raised her middle finger.

She was making a ‘fuck off’ sign.

I was confused. I was shocked. There were only a few things that generated those feelings in me. I was having a truly weird moment right now. I liked it.

I can tell you that this whole book blog is all part of his plan. It is nothing but his masterful Deception. Read him at your expense, available since 15th of September, beware that he is waiting to charm you.  And, no one, but Oriana is immune.
