This week’s theme is  laughter.

~~~~~~~~~~
I went my own way with the theme this week and stretched out laughter to smile.
Where Peaceful Waters Flow is from Imagination, the eleventh studio album of mega superstar R & B group, Gladys Knight & the Pips. The moderately successful adult contemporary hit didn’t reach the heights of the album’s Midnight Train to Georgia or Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me, but it still receives airplay today–forty-five years after it’s release.
In the chorus of the song of love and support, she sings, “Come take my hand and walk with me awhile, let me teach you how to smile,” knowing that bringing a smile to his face will help heal his soul… and heart.
Enjoy!
Where Peaceful Waters Flow
(Come and walk with me)
(We can go where peaceful waters flow)
If loneliness surrounds you
And rain clouds always hang around you
And wakin’ up each day gets you down (Gets you down, gets you down)
And if the life that you’re leading
Seems hollow, then maybe what you’re needing
Is someone to turn your world around
(Take my hand) Come take my hand and walk with me (And walk awhile)
(Let me teach you how to smile) Let me teach you how to smile
(And Ill show you skies ) And Ill show you skies where gentle breezes blow
(Where breezes, gentle breezes blow) Yeah, hey
And Ill take you where peaceful waters flow (Peaceful waters flow)
If you let me Ill take you where peaceful waters flow
(Come and walk with me) Mmm, hmm
(We can go where peaceful waters flow)
Now if the sunshine hurts your eyes, boy
Then its time for you to realize, boy
Beyond this moment there’s
A better day (Better day), mmm, hmm (Better day)
And if you let me
Ill guide you, mmm
Ill always be there, right there beside you
Reaching every step of your way
(Come take my hand and walk) Come take my hand and walk with me awhile
(And walk awhile) Yeah, hey, hey
(Let me teach you how to smile ) Let me teach you how to smile
And Ill show you skies (Ill show you skies ) where gentle breezes blow
(Where breezes, gentle breezes blow) Hey, yeah, hey, hey, hey
And Ill take you where peaceful waters flow (Peaceful waters flow)
Hey, hey, if you trust me, Ill take you there where peaceful waters flow
(Come and walk with me) Mmm…hmm…
(We can go where peaceful waters flow)
Song Lyric Sunday | “I Care ‘Bout You” – Milestone
Song Lyric Sunday was created by Helen Vahdati from This Thing Called Life One Word at a Time and we’re all heartbroken to see her step away for health reasons, but we wish Helen a full recovery to good health and a happy 2019! Many thanks to author Jim Adams from A Unique Title For Me for stepping in to keep the weekly challenge going. For complete rules or to join in the fun, click here.
This week’s theme is  doctor/health/medicinebut I put this post together early as a favorite song!
~~~~~~~~~~

I Care ‘Bout You is from the soundtrack of the 1997 movie, Soul Food, starring Vanessa Williams.

The song is performed by the quartet group Milestone, which is actually artist and super music producer, Babyface, with his brothers, Kevon and Melvin Edmonds, and brothers Cedric ‘K-Ci’ & Joel ‘JoJo’ Hailey, (formerly of the chart-topping R & B group, Jodeci) who all came together only to record the single and appear in the movie.

The soundtrack was a huge success, peaking at #4 on the Billboard 200, #1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and was certified 2x Multi-Platinum on February 17, 1998. Four singles made it to the Billboard Hot 100: I Care ‘Bout You, Total’s What About Us?, Dru Hill’s We’re Not Making Love No More, and Boys II Men’s A Song for Mama—making it to 23, 16, 13, and 7 on the chart, respectively. A Song for Mama was also a #1 R&B single.

I posted two versions of the video.

The official video is an amazing blend of the group, movie clips… and picture frames!

The second video is a live performance from Oprah. Milestone does a great job, of course, but it’s the audience reactions that truly make the video. They really get into it!

Enjoy!

I Care ‘Bout You

[Verse 1: JoJo]
Sometimes I feel so alone. I call your heart
But there’s no one at home. Taking a toll on my pride
I’m reaching out but there’s no one inside

[Verse 2: Kevon Edmonds]
You know it doesn’t feel right, when I look
In your eyes. I know love is blind, but the
Heart doesn’t lie. I’ll ask one more time
Maybe this time you’ll try. So tell me girl
What’s deep in your heart

[Hook: All]
Girl, i care about you. I’m there for you
So why don’t you care for me like I care about you?
Girl, I care about you. I’m there for you
So why don’t you care for me like I care about you?

[Verse 3: Melvin Edmonds]
I spend like all of my days trying to suss out
Just how things got this way. I thought that we were
In love. But, I swear right now I don’t know what
You want

[Verse 4:K-Ci]
I make sure that I give you quality time
But, lately I feel you’re not home by design
But still Im gon’ try to give you the love of my life
In hopes that you will open up your heart

[Hook]

[Bridge: Kevon & K-Ci]
Sometimes (sometimes i’m not) I’m not sure that
(Im all you’ve got) That i’m all you’ve got
(Sometimes i’m not) Sometimes i’m not sure if you
Love me, or not (babe)
Just one thing i know, girl i care for you
And the one thing that i want is that you care for me too

Song Lyric Sunday | “New Attitude” – Patti LaBelle

SLS banner

Song Lyric Sunday was created by Helen Vahdati from This Thing Called Life One Word at a Time. For complete rules or to join in the fun, click here.

This week’s theme is new.”

~~~~~~~~~~
I don’t make new year’s resolutions but this week’s theme brings to mind the song which sums up my mindset for 2019 – New Attitude!
Patti Labelle recorded this song for the soundtrack of the movie Beverly Hills Cop, starring Eddie Murphy. It was a huge career boost for LaBelle, who had released six solo albums but had yet to place a song in the Top-40. The MTV era was passing her by, as she was having trouble gaining new fans.
Getting involved with the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack was auspicious. She recorded New Attitude and Stir It Up from the set. The movie premiered on December 5, 1984 and became the top film of the year, eventually taking in over $234 million at the American box office. The soundtrack album went to #1, providing great exposure for the song, which fittingly is about a confident, new outlook on life.
Fun Facts
  • Patti’s video for New Attitude got her on MTV for the first time, and in 1986 she had a #1 hit with On My Own, a duet with Michael McDonald.
  • Unlike other hits from the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack – Axel F by Harold Faltermeyer, Neutron Dance by The Pointer Sisters, and The Heat Is On by Glenn Frey – New Attitude was not used in the movie.
  • The backup singers on this track—Carla Benson, Evette Benton and Barbara Ingram—were the same ladies who sang on another motivational song of the era: Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now by McFadden & Whitehead. They toured with Pattie Labelle for the next five years.
New Attitude
Runnin’ hot
Runnin’ cold
I was runnin’ into overload
It was extreme!
I took it so high
So low
So low there was nowhere to go
Like a bad dream
Somehow the wires were crossed, the tables were turned
Never knew I had such a lesson to learn
I’m feelin’ good from
My head to my shoes
Know where I’m goin’
And I know what to do
I’ve tidied up my point of view
I got a new attitude
I’m in control
My worries are few
‘Cause I’ve got love
Like I never knew
Oo, oo, oo, oo, ooh
I got a new attitude
I’m wearing a new dress, new hat
Brand new ideals
As a matter of fact
I’ve changed for good
It must have been the cool night
New moon, slight change
Or that look in your eye
That makes me feel like I should
Somehow the wires uncrossed
The tables were turned
Never knew I had such a lesson to learn
I’m feelin’ good from
My head to my shoes
Know where I’m goin’
And I know what to do
I’ve tidied up my point of view
I got a new attitude
I’m in control
My worries are few
‘Cause I’ve got love
Like I never knew
Oo, oo, oo, oo, ooh
I got a new attitude
Oo, oo, oo, oo, ooh
Somehow the wires uncrossed
My tables were turned
Never knew I had such a lesson to learn
I’m feelin’ good from
My head to my shoes
Know where I’m goin’
And I know what to do
I’ve tidied up my point of view
I got a new attitude
I’m in control
My worries are few
‘Cause I’ve got love
Like I never knew
Oo, oo, oo, oo, ooh
I got a new attitude
Feelin’ new
Feelin’ new
My head to my shoes are brand new
I’ve got a new, new attitude
Everything about me has changed
Baby, I ain’t the same
I’ve got a new
I’ve got a new
I’ve got a brand new, brand new attitude
Yes, I do
I’ve got a new…
Song Lyric Sunday | “Every Year, Every Christmas” – Luther Vandross
Song Lyric Sunday was created by Helen Vahdati from This Thing Called Life One Word at a Time. For complete rules or to join in the fun, click here.
This week’s theme is season.”
~~~~~~~~~~

I have four CDs I don’t have to wait until Christmas to play. Luther Vandross’ 1995 This is Christmas is one of them.

The song I put on repeat the most? Every Year, Every Christmas.

Co-written by Vandross and Richard Marx, the song is about a man and woman agreeing to meet at a certain time and place on Christmas… and she doesn’t show up. Yet, the man returns every year, hopeful this will be the year she comes. Of course, she doesn’t, but it’s Luther Vandross singing, so I’m good. 😀

The single enjoyed moderate success, reaching number thirty-two on the R & B charts, but the album went to number 4 at both Billboards Top Holiday Albums and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and was certified platinum. It’s also a steady seller throughout the Christmas season.

Enjoy!

Every Year, Every Christmas

I don’t know how love could do this to me
I’ve waited and waited for someone I never see
But I’m so sentimental, and I’m so hopeful you’ll be there
So, here I am every year, every Christmas
I’ve wished for you in my heart and in my head
And I got my answer that first moment that we met
And, oh yes, I believed you as you told me, as you said
You’d be here every year, every Christmas
There must be a lesson for me to learn
If you don’t trust in love, you’ll get nothing in return
Why should I be lonely, don’t tell me it’s right
I have my pride, but I’d rather be with you tonight
So much emotion, it’s driving me mad
But I’ll take my chances with these feelings that I have
And I’ll come back to this same corner where we met
And I’ll be here every year, every Christmas
Mere words can’t explain the pain and the fear
‘Cause oh, I wonder, yes, I wonder are you gonna leave me standing here
Today’s almost over, but I don’t want to leave
Has my heart made a fool out of me?
My friends gather round me with holiday cheer
They say to forget you, to let you go ’cause you’re not here
Well, I can’t keep explaining what they’ll never understand
And why I’m here every year, every Christmas
I return every year, every Christmas
I come here every year, every Christmas

Song Lyric Sunday | “The Lady in Red” – Chris de Burgh

SLS banner

Song Lyric Sunday was created by Helen Vahdati from This Thing Called Life One Word at a Time. For complete rules or to join in the fun, click here.

This week’s theme is girl(s).”

~~~~~~~~~~
I went a bit further with the theme, choosing an adult form of girl(s)…lady.
The Lady in Red was released in June 1986  by British-Irish singer-songwriter Chris de Burgh as the second single from his album Into the Light. The song was responsible for introducing de Burgh’s music to a mainstream audience worldwide.
The song was written in reference to (though not specifically about) his wife, Diane. On the British TV series This Is Your Life, de Burgh said that the song was inspired by the memory of when he first saw Diane, and how men so often cannot even remember what their wives were wearing when they first met.
The song was a massive hit across the world, quickly becoming de Burgh’s best-selling single and his signature song, transforming him from a cult artist into a household name in many countries. It reached the number one position in Canada, the UK, Ireland, the Flanders region of Belgium and Norway. It also reached number three in the United States during the spring of 1987.
FUN FACTS:
  • Despite the song’s worldwide appeal, it tends to divide public opinion and it was voted the tenth most annoying song of all time in a poll commissioned by Dotmusic in 2000. It was one of only two singles in the top ten which were not novelty songs.
  • It was also voted the third worst song of the 1980s by readers of Rolling Stone.
  • In a 2001 poll of more than 50,000 Channel 4 viewers and readers of The Observer, the song was voted the fourth most hated UK number-one single.
  • Neil Norman of The Independent argued in 2006: “Only James Blunt has managed to come up with a song more irritating than Chris de Burgh’s Lady in Red.
To be fair, during the height of the song’s popularity, it was hard to turn on a music station and not hear it…several times! Still, it’s a great song.
Enjoy!
The Lady in Red
[Verse 1]
I’ve never seen you looking so lovely as you did tonight
I’ve never seen you shine so bright
I’ve never seen so many men ask you if you wanted to dance
They’re looking for a little romance
Given half a chance
And I have never seen that dress you’re wearing
Or the highlights in your hair that catch your eyes
I have been blind
[Chorus]
The lady in red is dancing with me
Cheek to cheek
There’s nobody here
It’s just you and me
It’s where I want to be
But I hardly know this beauty by my side
I’ll never forget the way you look tonight
[Verse 2]
I’ve never seen you looking so gorgeous as you did tonight
I’ve never seen you shine so bright
You were amazing
I’ve never seen so many people want to be there by your side
And when you turned to me and smiled
It took my breath away
And I have never had such a feeling
Such a feeling of complete and utter love
As I do tonight
[Chorus]
The lady in red is dancing with me
Cheek to cheek
There’s nobody here
It’s just you and me
It’s where I want to be
But I hardly know this beauty by my side
I’ll never forget the way you look tonight
I never will forget the way you look tonight
The lady in red
The lady in red
The lady in red, my lady in red
I love you
Song Lyric Sunday | “The Boy is Mine” – Brandy feat. Monica
SLS banner
Song Lyric Sunday was created by Helen Vahdati from This Thing Called Life One Word at a Time. For complete rules or to join in the fun, click here.
This week’s theme is boys.”
~~~~~~~~~~

Let’s try posting Song Lyric Sunday actually ON Sunday, shall we? (As the mister smirks at me, shaking his head.) He should walk away or his dinner may revolve around a Lunchable! 😀

The Boy is Mine is a R&B duet by Brandy, featuring Monica and was the lead single off both singers second album’s, Never Say Never and The Boy Is Mine, and was their first #1 Billboard-hit. The song would eventually win the Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals, and in fact, The Boy is Mine became the all-time #1 female duet in US chart history, and the top-selling US single in 1998.

FUN FACTS:

  • The Boy is Mine was inspired by Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson’s 1982 duet The Girl Is Mine, and by The Jerry Springer Show, where love triangles among the guests were a common theme.
  • The song exploited the persistent rumor that Brandy and Monica were locked in a genuine feud. The two singers didn’t even know each other.
  • Originally Monica and Brandy recorded the song together in Los Angeles. However the joint recording was felt to be a failure so Monica rerecorded her vocals separately in Atlanta under producer Dallas Austin, who also worked with popular trio TLC on songs like Creep and Unpretty.
  • The song spent 13 weeks at #1 in the US.
  • It topped the Canadian charts for 15 weeks.

Enjoy!

The Boy is Mine

[Intro]
The boy is mine
The boy is mine
The boy is mine
The boy is mine[Intro: Brandy & Monica]
– Excuse me! Can I, please, talk to you for a minute?
Uh huh. Sure. You know, you look kinda familiar
– Yeah, you do too. But I just wanted to know, do you know somebody named… You know his name
Oh yeah, definitely I know his name
– Well, I just want to let you that he’s mine
Huh. No, no. He’s mine!

[Chorus: Monica & Brandy]
You need to give it up
Had about enough
It’s not hard to see
The boy is mine
I’m sorry that you
Seem to be confused
He belongs to me
The boy is mine

[Verse 1: Brandy & Monica]
Think its time we got this straight
Sit and talk face to face
There is no way you could mistake
Him for your man, are you insane?
But see I know that you may be
Just a bit jealous of me
But you’re blind if you can’t see
That his love is all in me
See, I tried to hesitate
I didn’t want to say what he told me
He said without me he couldn’t make it
Through the day, ain’t that a shame
But maybe you misunderstood
‘Cause I can’t see how he could
Wanna change something that’s so good
All my love was all it took (the boy is mine)

[Chorus: Monica & Brandy]
You need to give it up
Had about enough (enough)
It’s not hard to see
The boy is mine (boy is mine)
I’m sorry that you (sorry that you)
Seem to be confused (confused)
He belongs to me
The boy is mine

[Verse 2: Monica & Brandy]
Must you do the things you do
You keep on acting like a fool
You need to know it’s me not you
And if you didn’t know it, girl, it’s true
I think that you should realize
And try to understand why
He is a part of my life
I know it’s killing you inside
You can say what you wanna say
What we have you can’t take
From the truth you can’t escape
I can tell the real from the fake
When will you get the picture?
You’re the past, I’m the future
Get away, it’s my time to shine
If you didn’t know the boy is mine (the boy is mine)

[Chorus: Monica & Brandy]
You need to give it up
Had about enough (enough)
It’s not hard to see (to see)
The boy is mine (the boy is mine)
I’m sorry that you (sorry that you)
Seem to be confused (seem to be confused)
He belongs to me (he belongs to me)
The boy is mine (the boy is mine)
You need to give it up
Had about enough (had about enough)
It’s not hard to see
The boy is mine (he’s mine, he’s mine, he’s mine, he’s mine)
I’m sorry that you (I’m so sorry)
Seem to be confused (you seem to be confused)
He belongs to me (he belongs to me)
The boy is mine

[Verse 3: Monica & Brandy]
You can’t destroy this love I’ve found
Your silly games I won’t allow
The boy is mine without a doubt
You might as well throw in the towel
What makes you think that he wants you
When I’m the one that brought him to
The special place that’s in my heart?
He was my love right from the start

[Chorus: Monica & Brandy]
You need to give it up (baby don’t lie)
Had about enough (had about enough)
It’s not hard to see (it’s not hard to see)
The boy is mine (the boy is mine)
I’m sorry that you (I’m sorry that you)
Seem to be confused (seem to be confused)
He belongs to me (he belongs to me)
The boy is mine (no, no)

[Chorus: Monica & Brandy]
You need to give it up (you need to give it up)
Had about enough (had enough)
It’s not hard to see (it’s not hard to see)
The boy is mine (the boy is mine)
I’m sorry that you
Seem to be confused (seem to be confused)
He belongs to me (he belongs to me)
The boy is mine (the boy is mine)
You need to give it up (not yours)
Had about enough (but mine, not yours)
It’s not hard to see (but mine, not yours)
The boy is mine (but mine)

[Outro: Monica & Brandy]
I’m sorry that you
Seem to be confused
He belongs to me
The boy is mine
